Waterford businesses make it their business to become more Age Friendly

Currently there are over 1 million older people (65+) living and shopping in Ireland, with this number set to increase by 50% by 2051.

With older people accounting for 50% of consumer spending, Waterford Age Friendly Alliance, in association with Waterford and Dungarvan Chambers of Commerce is preparing an Age Friendly Business Recognition Charter programme.  The programme is designed to assist local businesses adopt an inclusive retail strategy to ensure their customers’ experience is pleasant and comfortable.

According to Kevin Moynihan, Waterford Age Friendly Programme Manager with Waterford City and County Council, the Charter clearly identifies the businesses that not only value to custom of older customers, but are working to create an inclusive and enjoyable consumer experience.

To become certified as an Age Friendly Business, Kevin outlines the steps involved for any business that is interested in partaking in the programme.

“Firstly, each business should nominate a staff member to act as a champion for age-friendliness.  That ‘champion’ will then participate in the Age Friendly Business online workshops to develop ideas and a roadmap to becoming more equitable and inclusive.  Collaboration with older customers is also paramount to find out what they want, what can be improved and how the business can become a more welcoming environment for them.”

Once these actions are implemented, the business will receive its Age Friendly Business Charter.

If you are interested in participating and helping to make Waterford a great place to live and grow older in, an Age Friendly Business Workshop takes place via Zoom at 10am, Thursday, October 28th

To receive a link to the workshop, email kmoynihan@waterfordcouncil.ie or to find out more about the Age Friendly Initiative visit www.agefriendlyireland.ie

New Festival & Event Funding Policy adopted by Waterford City & County Council /RÁITEAS NUACHTA Polasaí Nua do Mhaoiniú Féilte & Imeachtaí glactha ag Comhairle Cathrach & Contae Phort Láirge

At the September meeting of the Plenary Council, Waterford City & County Council adopted a new Festival & Event Funding Policy which will help ensure that funding will be available to help events across Waterford to develop and grow and to ensure that Waterford continues to be the best place to live in Ireland.

The policy, which identifies a number of flagship festivals for Waterford, will put larger scale events on a surer footing by committing to three years funding.  This commitment by the Council will put these events, which attract regional and national audiences to Waterford, in a stronger position to secure acts and artists of a calibre that will raise both their and Waterford’s profile nationally and internationally.

Under the new policy, training will be provided to all event organisers to help them develop their event and create opportunities for existing events to grow and for new events to become established.  Details of the training will be advertised on Waterford Council’s social media in the coming weeks.

Festival and event organisers across Waterford are now being encouraged to apply for funding for events to be held in 2022.  Applications can be submitted online from October 5th at www.waterfordfestivals.ie and the closing date for applications is Sunday, November 7th

A helpline will be open from Wednesday, October 6th to Friday, November 5th to answer any queries relating to the application process – 0761 10 2169.

Last Two Weeks f Light And Language At Lismore Castle Arts

Lismore Castle Arts presents Light and Language.
Curated by Lisa Le Feuvre.
Artist Nancy Holt with A.K Burns, Matthew Day Jackson, Dennis McNulty, Charlotte Moth and Katie Paterson.

Gallery open Monday to Sunday 10:30 am to 5:30 pm

The artist Nancy Holt is at center of Light and Language. Nancy Holt (1938-2014) was an artist who rethought the limits and the possibilities of art. She was a key member of the Earth, Land and Conceptual art movements, an important female voice in the groundbreaking 1960s and 70s New York art scene. For five decades she asked difficult questions about how we might try to understand our place in the world. Holt’s art continues to inspire and recalibrate the possibilities of what art can be, and where it can be found.

Light and Language invites the artists A.K. Burns, Matthew Day Jackson, Dennis McNulty, Charlotte Moth, and Katie Paterson to explore ideas of light and language alongside Nancy Holt. This is the first time Holt’s work has been seen with twenty-first-century artists drawing from her legacies. The exhibition takes place at Lismore Castle Arts, one of Ireland’s leading spaces for experimental contemporary art. It stretches from Lismore Castle’s gallery spaces, through the castle gardens, into the surrounding everyday life of the town of Lismore.

The six artists in Light and Language pay attention to the structures and perceptions of light and language. At the center is Holt’s room-sized installation Electrical System (1982), presented for the first time in more than three decades. Formed of over one-hundred glowing light bulbs, Electrical System is an example of Holt’s innovative ‘system sculptures’ that make the facts of architecture visible. Holt described that these “sculptures are exposed fragments of vast hidden systems, they are part of open-ended systems, part of the world.”

Great Calligraphy Festival Celebrating the Art of Writing in Waterford

During lockdown the Waterford Great Parchment Book (1356-1649) was chosen for inclusion in the prestigious Irish Script on Screen project and now all 450 pages are available worldwide on www.isos.dias.ie.

To celebrate Waterford Treasures wanted to have a Great Calligraphy Festival, Celebrating the Art of Writing in Waterford.  Thanks to funding from Creative Ireland/ Waterford this has come to fruition and Waterford Treasures will also put a ‘Turning the Page’ interactive into the gallery where the Book is displayed, with translations, thanks to the late Dr Niall Byrne and his family.

The Great Calligraphy Festival, Celebrating the Art of Writing in Waterford will be both online and in-person.  Videos, tutorials and inspirational pieces by the world famous calligrapher Denis Brown are available on Waterford Treasures YouTube channel and other social media.  Exploring the Great Parchment Book and teaching about writing and book production,  Denis will also teach Gothic script, the one used in the Parchment Book and a small number of people will participate in an in-person workshop on 23rd September.

Rosemary Ryan of Waterford Treasures commented, ‘The Waterford Great Parchment Book is a unique source for how a great medieval city operated in the Middle Ages.  Thanks to funding by Creative Ireland/Waterford we can now explore its content and actual production. Who actually were the guys who did the writing?  Since they couldn’t buy online or in the stationery shop how did they get their ink and quills and vellum?  The Book is now online thanks to the Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies and our Festival will celebrate the Art of Writing in Waterford.  Please join us!’

The Great Parchment Book is a Waterford Council record and covers 300 years in Waterford’s story 1356-1649, ending abruptly with Oliver Cromwell at the gates.  It is written in Latin, French and English and is the earliest use of English for city records in Ireland.  From it we learn lots of vivid detail of life in medieval Waterford, for example that plague killed 2,256 people in the year September 1603 to September 1604.  August was a particularly bad month with 116 deaths weekly.   The city officials realised that the disease was being spread by soldiers of the garrison, who were raiding the houses of the dead at night to steal their clothes and goods. The successful measures enacted to stop this pilfering make fascinating reading.

Rosemary added, ‘We would love the whole of Waterford to be writing together…students, schools, Friends of the Museum, graphic companies, would-be calligraphers everywhere, to celebrate the Art of Writing in Waterford.  Any self-respecting Goth needs to be able to write in Gothic script!  Sharpen up your quills, make your ink, purchase your parchment, and make your mark!  Learning to write is an amazing achievement!  We may not write as much as we used to but we are still very influenced by scripts, fonts, and typefaces.  Before Gutenberg’s printing press in Europe about AD1450 they had to handwrite every document and book.  Printing changed the world!’

Interpretation Plan for Waterford Medieval City Walls commissioned

Waterford City and County Council has commissioned an Interpretation Plan for the Waterford Medieval City Walls and is inviting input from members of the public.

Pictured are Cllr. Seanie Power Deputy Mayor, James Hennessey of Paul Hogart & Co, Rose Ryall Conservation officer and Eamonn McEneany is Waterford’s city historian and the Director of the Waterford Treasures Museum. Pictures: Patrick Browne

The Medieval City Walls and Towers form a prominent landmark that influence the character of Waterford, while also providing a tangible link to the story of Ireland’s first city. However, at present there is very little interpretation of the Walls and Towers, their significance and the stories associated with them.

The Interpretation Plan has been made possible with funding from The Heritage Council and its preparation will take place over the months of September and October.  It will involve a review of existing interpretation followed by the development of strategies and themes to imaginatively communicate the importance of the medieval walls with the public, both locals and visitors alike.

Welcoming the plan, Deputy Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Seanie Power said, “The medieval walls are such an integral part of our city and this important initiative will play a key role in elevating their status as part of the visitor offer. This project complements the continued programme of investment in Waterford City Centre and we look forward to seeing its recommendations later in the year.”

The plan is being prepared by a consultancy team led The Paul Hogarth Company, bringing with them extensive experience of innovative interpretation and public realm projects across Ireland.

The team would like to hear from members of the public about the relationship they have with Waterford City’s medieval walls.   An online public survey has been published and can be completed by Monday, September 27th.

Director James Hennessey said, “We are delighted to be working in Waterford City on this project to help bring the wonderful medieval walls to life.  We very much hope that the people of the city and beyond will join us in this process, sharing what the walls mean to them and the many stories that they hold”.

The online survey can be found on the website and social media accounts of Waterford City and County Council, or by following this link https://awqaw573pjr.typeform.com/Waterford

Waterford Council to Light Up for World Suicide Prevention Day

Waterford City and County Council, in support of Cycle Against Suicide, will light up on World Suicide Prevention Day, which takes place on September 10th.

On average one person dies by suicide each day in Ireland.  Cycle Against Suicide, an organisation dedicated to raising public awareness around suicide and lessening the toll suicide places on families and communities, is calling on people and organisations to come together for the Lighting of Lights.

At 8pm, Friday, September 10th Waterford’s City Hall, The Theatre Royal and 35, The Mall will be illuminated in orange, to show support for those in the community who have been impacted by suicide or are struggling with mental health difficulties.

Caroline Lafferty, CEO, Cycle Against Suicide said, “Every suicide destroys families and communities.  September 10th is traditionally marked as a day to honour those who have lost their lives to suicide.”

“Now, in light of Covid-19, the ‘Lighting of Lights’ takes on even greater significance because of the immense toll that the pandemic has taken on people’s physical health and emotional well-being.  I am delighted that Waterford City and County Council will light up in orange on this World Suicide Prevention Day and act as a beacon, shining bright in the midst of darkness, bringing hope in the midst of despair.”

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Joe Kelly said that the Lighting of Lights will hopefully impact on those who are suffering from mental health difficulties or contemplating suicide.

“Every life lost is someone’s child, partner, parent or friend and the feelings of loss, regret and guilt are profound in the wake of suicide. The last eighteen months have been phenomenally challenging, and while people may feel helpless, there is hope.  The more we stand together, the more we share our experiences and the more we reach out, the more we can change the course of another’s life for the better.”

The Russian poet Osip Mendelston believed that poems came to him from sources beyond his own mind. When we read poetry that comes from that place we become alert, still and present. For this hour Lani will explore the landscape of the body, and the landscape around us in Co. Waterford through breath, sound and poetry. Bring a notebook, pen and an open mind.
