The company is creating a large-scale art installation on the Arts Centre’s external walls which will be illuminated at night. It will remain in-situ throughout February.

“These have been tricky times for communities,” said Spraoi Artistic Director Mike Leahy. “We wanted to work with the Arts Centre to create images, sounds and words of light and hope that mirror spring’s arrival, representing as it does longer days and a sense of optimism for Dungarvan.”

Salute to Spring will include soundtracks created by West Waterford artists including Moe Dunford (Actor), Áine Uí Fhoghlú (Poet), George Higgs (Musician/Composer), and Hannah Carberry (Writer). The soundtracks will be available via QR Code and can be listened to on mobile phones and other devices.

Waterford musicians and performers encouraged to apply for Music and Entertainment Business Assistance Scheme 2022 (MEBAS 2022)

  • €4m has been allocated for MEBAS 2022 to support those operating in the music sector
  • Self-employed performers, sole traders and businesses in the music industry with turnovers of €15,000 and over will be able to apply for grants of between €1,500 and €12,500
  • Performers such as musicians, singers, DJs, lighting and sound crew, audio equipment suppliers etc. will be eligible to apply
  • The scheme will open for applications at 1pm on January 27th and close at 1pm on February 17th.

Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, announced the opening date for the 2022 strand of the MEBAS (Music and Entertainment Business Assistance Scheme).  This simpler, easier to access new scheme will further support performers and individuals in the music business that have been impacted by the COVID-19 restrictions.

The Minister said:

“I have engaged extensively with stakeholders to understand the challenges faced by them and put in place supports that work for the sector. I am pleased to announce that MEBAS 2022 will open for applications on Thursday January 27th. As part of the €50m in supports I have secured for the Live Entertainment sector for 2022, I have allocated €4m to MEBAS 2022.”

The guidelines for MEBAS 2022 will be published next Tuesday, January 25th on the Department’s website in advance of the application portal opening on Thursday, January 27th 2022

The scheme will operate in a similar manner to CRSS (Covid Restrictions Support Scheme) by providing grants of up to the value of 15% of the average monthly VAT-exclusive turnover prior to the pandemic.

The aim of this scheme is to make a contribution to the overheads of self-employed people and sole traders in the music industry who have been significantly negatively affected by COVID-19. To be eligible, individuals/sole traders will need to demonstrate that their 2021 turnover was no more than 40% of their average turnover prior to the pandemic.

The Minister added:

“As part of a suite of measures to support those in the sector, MEBAS was launched in 2021 as a targeted support for self-employed performers and sole traders operating solely in the live entertainment sector who did not qualify for other business supports such as CRSS and who were significantly impacted by restrictions introduced to combat the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

In 2021, MEBAS supported over 1,000 such performers and live entertainment businesses. For MEBAS 2022, the Minister has again made funding available, which is expected to support a similar number of performers, crew, and sole traders in the music industry.  Self-employed individuals and sole traders including performers such as musicians, singers, DJs, lighting and sound crew, and audio equipment suppliers will be eligible to apply.

The grant will be paid for six months, January 2022 to June 2022, to assist self-employed performers, sole traders and businesses which have seen significant reductions in their turnover due to the COVID-19 pandemic and help to underpin their recovery as the restrictions are eased in the coming months.

In 2022, the Minister has made €50m available to support live entertainment. The following funding schemes have been provided to date:

  • €5m LPSS 2 – Pantomime scheme
  • €20m LPSS 3 – Scheme to cover December/January cancellations
  • €5m Local Live Performance Support Scheme (LLPSS)
  • €4m Music and Entertainment Support Scheme (MEBAS)
  • €5m (capital) Commercial Entertainment Capital Grant Scheme (CECGS)
  • €1m St. Patricks Festival

In 2021, these schemes supported thousands of individuals and businesses operating in the live events sector and thousands of hours of employment for artists and crews staging events.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations set to return to Waterford

Following a two year hiatus Waterford City and County Council is delighted to announce that March 2022 will see the return of the much loved and dearly missed St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

While official celebrations were postponed due to Covid-19 in 2020 and 2021, the most anticipated event on the national calendar is set to return and this year the theme of the parade is ‘Waterford – Ireland’s Best Place to Live’.

With the support of Fáilte Ireland, Waterford City and County Council is also pleased to announce the launch of Waterford’s first ever St Patrick’s Day Festival.

The three day event, taking place from March 17th to March 19th is a celebration of ‘Waterford, Where St. Patrick’s Day began’, as Waterford was Ireland’s first City to hold a St. Patrick’s Day Parade over a century ago!

The three day festival will pay homage to Waterford’s people and communities, its culture and heritage, its diversity, and its musical and artistic talent.

In light of the most recent government announcement and the easing of restrictions Waterford City and County Council and Everyevent Promotions have commenced planning in earnest. The festival committee is very much looking forward to unveiling an exciting programme of events in the coming weeks.

Mayor of Waterford Cllr Joe Kelly said, “It really is great to have such an exciting event to look forward to.  Unfortunately our St. Patrick’s Day festivities couldn’t go ahead for the last two years, but we are delighted to be able to reintroduce them, bigger and better this year, with a wonderful three day celebration of our city and its heritage.”

“I’ve no doubt that our vibrant and creative community groups, cultural organisations, musicians and entertainers will contribute to an exciting programme that can be enjoyed by everyone over three fantastic days.”

There will also be an online element to St. Patrick’s Day as the parade will be live streamed, so those who cannot attend or remain cautious about attending large events can still share in the celebrations.

Details of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and festival event will be revealed in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on www.stpatricksfestivalwaterford.com or on Facebook at WaterfordStPatricksDayParade.

West Waterford Festival of Food to return in June

The 13th annual West Waterford Festival of Food is to take place from 10-12 June 2022. Typically an April event, the new date for 2022 is to allow time following the upheaval over the past two years for West Waterford’s producers, chefs, suppliers, growers and brewers to prepare for one of Ireland’s biggest foodie festivals. Full details of the programme will be announced in the coming weeks.

West Waterford Festival of Food CEO Maeve Quill said: “We are delighted to announce that West Waterford Festival of Food will return in 2022, having been sadly missed from our calendars over the past two years. This three-day foodie paradise is incredibly close to the hearts of all those involved, the local West Waterford area, and of course the wider foodie community. To ensure we put on a Festival that is a real showcase event, we wanted to allow all those involved the time to prepare following a turbulent two years. For visitors, June will be a better and safer time of the year for dining events, as it allows us more outside dining opportunities and for our amazing suppliers and other stakeholders, the new date will allow them time and space to resolve any staffing or business issues that they may have.

“Waterford has a strong culinary reputation, having been named the winner of Foodie Destinations back in 2019. It is incredible news that we can once again shine a spotlight on the food from West Waterford, and the amazing culinary talent that we have.”

The 2022 West Waterford Festival of Food is supported by Waterford City and County Council, Waterford Local Enterprise Office and LEADER Partnership.

“Through our funders, sponsors, producers, chefs, makers, supporters, venue hosts, friends, volunteers and of course, the visitors, West Waterford Festival of Food is made possible,” added Maeve. “We can’t wait to launch this year’s programme, which will be full of free and ticketed events and invite everyone to visit us from 10-12 June to indulge in the region’s best food, drink and live entertainment.”

Waterford Treasures ends year on a high

With so many highlights to choose from, 2021 ended on a high for Waterford Treasures.

With over €1.2 million donated by extremely generous private benefactors, the Viking Triangle was transformed into a leading visitor destination with the addition of two new museums; the Irish Museum of Time and the Irish Silver Museum.

The icing on the cake had a distinctive Waterford flavour as a painting by Thomas Roberts was gifted to the museum by an extraordinarily generous Waterfordian Dr Fiona Healy, benefactor of Waterford Treasures. The painting, ‘A Bay Horse and Two Donkeys in a Wooded Landscape’ dated to c1773, was gifted in memory of Fiona’s grandmother Agnes Healy, horsewoman and breeder of horses, and will adorn the Entrance Hall of the Bishop’s Palace.

Born in Cathedral Square to Susannah Mary Sautelle Roberts and architect John Roberts, Roberts was the greatest Irish landscape painter of the 1700s.  For over two decades it has been an ambition of the Museum to acquire a painting by Waterford man Thomas Roberts, and this recently became a reality.

Eamonn McEneaney, Director of Waterford Treasures was delighted to accept the painting from Dr Healy, “To be gifted such a wonderful painting by a renowned Waterford artist is extraordinary.  Thomas Roberts, despite a brief career produced works of outstanding quality and to have ‘A Bay Horse and Two Donkeys in a Wooded Landscape” adorning the entrance to the Bishop’s Palace really is a dream come true.”

“I’d like to thank Dr Healy for her generosity and support of Waterford Treasures and assure her that the painting will be cherished for generations to come.”

Leabhar Nua Faoi Bhriogáid Phort Láirge Thoir le Pat McCarthy

Tá leabhar nua scríofa ag an staraí, an Dr. Pat McCarthy dar teideal “Waterford City The East Waterford Brigade I.R.A. & The Struggle for Independence 1912-1921”. Cur síos ar stair an scéil pholaitiúil i bPort Láirge ó 1912 go 1921 atá sa leabhar agus rianaíonn sé forbairt Bhriogáid Phort Láirge Thoir ó Óglaigh na hÉireann go dtí bunú na gcuideachtaí, trí ghníomhaíochtaí agus luíocháin, agus a cónascadh le Briogáid Phort Láirge Thiar.

Deir an t-údar Pat McCarthy, “Le linn Cogadh na Saoirse, bhí gach contae agus gach briogáid difriúil. Bhí fadhb ar leith le sárú ag Briogáid Phort Láirge Thoir, sa mhéid is go raibh an ceantar sin ar cheann de bheagán toghcheantar inar theip ar Shinn Féin sa streachailt pholaitiúil i 1918. Sa leabhar seo, déanaim scrúdú ar chonas ar thug an I.R.A. aghaidh ar iarmhairt na difríochta seo agus conas ar chuir sé seo leis an streachailt armtha. Tá súil agam go dtugann an leabhar seo deis do dhaoine níos mó a fhoghlaim faoin streachailt seo agus faoi na híobairtí a rinneadh i bPort Láirge.

Tugann an leabhar seo pictiúr cuimsitheach ar mhuintir agus ar pholaitíocht Phort Láirge le linn na tréimhse seo agus ar na streachailtí a bhí ag baill Bhriogáid Phort Láirge Thoir cur leis an troid ar son an neamhspleáchais. Tá an leabhar tiomnaithe d’fhir agus do mhná Chathair Phort Láirge agus Oirthear Phort Láirge a ghlac páirt sa streachailt ar son an neamhspleáchais agus go háirithe don cheathrar fear a thug a mbeatha ar son na cúise, siad san Séamus De Paor, Michéal Mac Craith, Tómas Ó Briain agus Seán Ó Ruairc.

Aithníonn an leabhar an méid uile a rinne baill iomlán na Briogáide agus baill Chumann na mBan trí liosta ainmneacha na mball a chur ar fáil sna haguisíní, ainmneacha a tógadh ó na rollaí ainmniúla a dhein thaifead ar an mballraíocht ag poinnte áirithe sa Sos Cogaidh ar an 11 Iúil 1921. Bailíodh na liostaí seo le chéile sna 1930idí agus atá siad i seilbh na Cartlainne Míleata.

Dúirt Michéal Ó Fearghaill, Cathaoirleach Choiste Cuimhneacháin Phort Láirge, “Tá Coiste na gCuimhneachán tiomanta le tacaíocht a thabhairt do chlár foilseachán a dhéanfaidh taifead ar Dheich mBliana na gCuimhneachán i bPort Láirge, ionas go mbeidh oidhreacht bhuan scoláireachta agus taighde againn ar an tréimhse is tábhachtaí dár stair.”

Fuair an tionscadal seo tacaíocht ón Roinn Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Ealaíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán, Clár Dheich mBliana gCuimhneachán 1913-1923 agus Coiste Cuimhneacháin Phort Láirge

Beidh sonraí chlár na dtionscadal do 2022 ar fáil go luath ar shuíomh idirlín Chomhairle Phort Láirge www.waterfordcouncil.ie nó https: //bit.ly/32yD0PV

Tá an leabhar ar fáil ar chostas €15 ón Book Centre i bPort Láirge nó ó Mhúsaem Chontae Phort Láirge i nDún Garbhán.

New Book on the East Waterford Brigade 1912-1921 by Pat McCarthy

Historian Dr. Pat McCarthy has written a new book “Waterford City The East Waterford Brigade I.R.A. & The Struggle for Independence 1912-1921”. The book gives a history of the political situation in Waterford from 1912 to 1921 and charts the development of the East Waterford Brigade from the Irish Volunteers to the establishment and formation of companies, through actions and ambushes and its amalgamation with the West Waterford Brigade.

Author, Pat McCarthy says “During the War of Independence, each county and each brigade was different. The East Waterford Brigade faced a unique problem as one of the few constituencies where Sinn Féin had failed to win the political struggle in 1918 and in the book I explore how the local I.R.A. faced the consequence of this difference and contributed to the armed struggle. I hope that this book gives people the opportunity to learn more about this struggle and the sacrifices that were made in Waterford”

The book gives a comprehensive picture of the people and politics of Waterford during the period and of the struggles of the members of the East Waterford Brigade to contribute to the fight for independence. The book is dedicated to “…the men and women of Waterford City and East Waterford who played their part in the struggle for independence and in particular to the four men who made the ultimate sacrifice: James Power, Michael McGrath, Thomas O’Brien and Seán O’Rourke.” The book acknowledges the contributions made by all members of the Brigade and members of Cumann na mBan by providing in its appendices the list of names of the members from the nominal rolls which recorded the membership at the point of the Truce on 11th July 1921 and were gathered together in the 1930s and are held by the Military Archives.

Michael Farrell, Chairman of the Waterford Commemorations Committee said  “The Commemorations Committee is dedicated to supporting a programme of publications to document the Decade of Centenaries in Waterford so that we have a lasting legacy of scholarship and research into this most important period in our history.”

This project was supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Decade of Centenaries 1913-1923 Programme and the Waterford Commemorations Committee.

Deatils of the programme of projects for 2022 will be available soon on the Waterford Council website www.waterfordcouncil.ie or https://bit.ly/32yD0PV

The book is available at a cost of €15 from the Book Centre in Waterford or from Waterford County Museum in Dungarvan.

My Gift to You

My gift to you is an opportunity for people over the age of 65 to sign up for a four month class where they can learn to put their personal history together. The class is free, it will be held on 1 evening per week and given by historian Dr. Maxine Keoghan. Other supports will be available with the help of a genealogist and a graphic designer. Participants will be assisted with research, writing and designing their book.. Class participants will be supported and instructed as to where to search for information and how to put their work together. The written piece will be edited and advice will be given as how to best present their work. The project was funded by The Ireland Funds.

Working within Covid restrictions has made the running of community projects a challenge but not impossible – ideally the course was planned for the long winter months but this is a relaxed project and people can start to put their thoughts and ideas together now and also they can start putting pen to paper or fingers to type. Participants must be able to use a computer and be able to type but it doesn’t matter how fast or how slow they type.     This class will be a mix of zoom and in person meeeings (when covid restrictions allow).

Dungarvan welcomes Ireland’s first outdoor ‘Learn to Cycle’ track

Ireland’s first and Dungarvan’s newest amenity area was officially opened with the addition of an outdoor ‘Learn to Cycle’ track.

The Learn to Cycle track will allow young children to learn to cycle on a ‘real life’ road structure with lines, signs and pedestrian crossing without the traffic.  This latest amenity at Fairlane adds to existing play facilities at the Linear Park, which include slides, swings and climbing frames, along with water fountains with bird feeding points which are a firm favourite with young and old.

With Waterford Greenway close by, the new Learn to Cycle track will also allow for those new cyclists to get some practice before taking to the Greenway proper.

Chair of Dungarvan / Lismore District Cllr. Tom Cronin highlighted how important such civic amenities are to our towns, villages and communities. “People have a new appreciation of the outdoors, and the numbers using such amenities are continuously growing.  This new cycle track will give those who are new to cycling a chance to test out their wheels on a purpose-built track.  It will be great to see people using this new amenity here at Fairlane Park in a safe and family-friendly environment.”

Kieran Kehoe, Director of Services and Dungarvan Town Manager commented, “This amenity is so accessible within the town centre, and is easily reachable from all surrounding areas.  Dungarvan is a ‘Smarter Travel’ town, which means that Waterford City and County Council in promoting the safe use of cycling, this facility will enable children to learn a life skill which will encourage the use of sustainable transport methods and move from over reliance on cars as their only method of transport which will benefit the climate and the environment.  Cycling around Dungarvan has never been safer.”

The next phase of the development, a Performance Area is at an advanced stage of construction and is due to be opened in the coming months.  When completed the recreation park will include a BMX Pump Track and  Skatepark.

Peter Jones, Waterford Sports Partnership also commented, “This is an innovative and exciting venture from Waterford City and County Council, which has engaged with many partners to ensure this unique facility is open to the people of Dungarvan.  The facility’s aim is to ensure we have a safe environment for children of all abilities to learn to cycle safely.  It will allow us to deliver Cycling Ireland courses including balance bike training, disability cycling, sprocket rocket and Cycle Right in a completely accessible and traffic free environment.  The facility will also utilise QR codes to assist parents in coaching their own children.”

Waterford City and County Council’s Road Safety Officer, Jemma Jacob added “We anticipate creches and pre-schools will use the facility to deliver Road Safety Authority programmes such as Simon and Friends and Road Safety Awareness week events.  By including a ‘real life’ road structure and two teaching areas, this facility will allow youngsters to learn how to step, stride, glide and turn on balance bikes and put these skills to the test in a mock road situation.”

The overall cost of the cycle track was €50,000 with Waterford City and County Council receiving funding from the Local Government Fund and the Capital Grant Scheme for Play and Recreation administered by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth. Works were completed earlier this month by contractors Richard Forristal Ltd.
