Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 – next targeted call for funding

NEXT TARGETED CALL FOR FUNDING ADVANCE NOTICE
The following information workshops will be held in advance of opening the next official call for Expression of Interests (EoI) for funding under the new Rural Development Programme 2014-2020.

Attendance at the Information Workshop is compulsory if you intend to apply for funding.

Following attendance at the above workshop, Waterford Leader Partnership CLG, on behalf of County Waterford LCDC, will seek Expressions of Interest (EOIs)

  • OPENING DATE FOR EOIs IS THURS 24th Oct 19 /CLOSING DATE IS 12PM Tues 29th Oct 19

Successful & unsuccessful EOI’s will be advised by 5pm on Wednesday 30th Oct ‘19. Invitation to application on Wed 30th Oct 19 with deadline for submission by 12pm Mon 18th Nov ’19

Invitation to application stage does not mean that you will be awarded grant aid as it is a
competitive process. (Please note that the minimum grant amount is €5,000 and the maximum is €30,000)

Funding may be awarded under all themes and sub themes to a maximum of 50% of the total project cost for private promoters and up to 75% for community group applicants. Consideration of the rate of aid offered will be done on a project by project basis.

Hour of Code – FREE training for Primary School Teachers

Waterford Primary School Teachers can join Rob O’Connor from Waterford’s Institute of Technology Department of Computing & Mathematics for a Talk and workshop on the Hour of Code and learn how to run their own coding activity in the classroom.

The “Hour of Code” is an international initiative to demystify coding and help make it accessible for all. All the resources are free and many of the activities are collaborations with licensed properties such as Star Wars or Minecraft. In the workshop, Rob will talk about some of their findings and reflections on the Hour of Code as well as how you can run you own activity.

This free workshop is organised by The Waterford Europe Direct Information Centre in partnership with WIT Dept. Of Computing & Mathematics and is part of EU Code Week. The WIT faculty from the Dept. of Computing & Mathematics have been running Hour of Code workshops since 2016.

The event takes place in The Hub, at Waterford Central Library, Lady Lane on Tuesday 15 October from 4:15 – 5:15pm. There will be some devices available on the day but attendees are welcome to bring their own laptop, tablet or iPad. Contact Lorraine Boyle on lboyle@waterfordcouncil.ie for more details.

Waterford Festivals Support Grants 2020 now open

Calling all Festival and Event Organisers

Each year Waterford City & County Council provide funding for festival and event organisers to aid with the development and promotion of events in Waterford City and County.  The purpose of the grant scheme is to help groups and organisations to fund a diverse range of events that are inclusive and add to the reputational value of Waterford as a ‘happening place’.

This year submissions can be made online via a new information website www.waterfordfestivals.ie, which has been co-designed with both staff and festival and event organisers.

A helpline number, 0761102169, will be available during office hours where staff will answer queries in relation to online applications.

We are also holding ‘Walk In’ information sessions at:

  • Waterford Central Library on Wednesday 16th October from 6-8pm and
  • Dungarvan Library on Thursday 17th October from 6-8pm, with no appointment necessary.

To enable online registration festival and event organisers are asked to bring their organisation’s generic email address with them .

REMINDER: ‘Diving for Pearls’ joint exhibition on Culture Night, Dungarvan


Culture Night, Friday 20th September 2019 sees the opening of an exciting new exhibition, ‘Diving for Pearls’ by two first cousins in the Old Market House Arts Centre in Dungarvan.

The exhibition features work by Sinead Ní Chionaola, a landscape artist originally from Dungarvan and Helen O’Connell, glass artist.  This will be the first time both cousins will host a joint exhibition of their work.  Both artists have a deep interest in the inner and outer landscapes of life, and acknowledge that while these landscapes are often dark,  “no grit – no pearl!”

This interesting perspective has inspired their joint collection, ‘Diving for Pearls’ which has been especially curated for Culture Night and will run until the end of October.  The Arts Centre is open from 6.30pm to 9pm on Culture Night with a special bi-lingual gallery talk by Sinéad and Helen at 7.30pm. All are welcome to this free event.

Waterford Integration Strategy for Migrant Communities

The Waterford Local & Community Development Committee (LCDC) along with partner agencies, are preparing a three-year strategy to promote the integration of migrants who live and work in our city and county.  The purpose of the strategy is to make Waterford a more welcoming and inclusive place, and to eliminate all forms of prejudice and intolerance.

As part of this process, Dr Breandán Ó Caoimh and Margaret Ward have been engaged to independently undertake a two surveys:

  • A survey of migrants (first and second generations) who live or work in Waterford (available in various languages).
  • A survey, open to all, to measure attitudes to various nationalities, ethnic and social groups in Waterford

Déise Day Centre’s entry to 2019 Cooperation Ireland National Pride of Place competition

Congratulations to Déise Day Centre on their entry to the 2019 Cooperation Ireland National Pride of Place competition

Competition judging took place on the afternoon of Tuesday July 2nd and a fantastic time was had by the judges, the Centre members, staff, management, volunteers and friends of the Centre.

The Pride of Place judges, John Fitzgerald and Declan Nelson, arrived at the Day Centre at 1.30pm on ‘Saoirse’, (the trishaw that the centre uses in conjunction with Waterford Sports Partnership) to be greeted by Pipers from the Dungarvan Pop-up Pipe Band.

Lunch was provided to all 150 in attendance which was followed by speakers Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. John Pratt and Donal Connolly Chairperson of Dungarvan Care of the Aged.

Centre Manager, Margaret Coffey delivered an extensive presentation highlighting what services are provided to the elderly in our community. This includes a Day service, transport, a hot meal, entertainment and activities. Also available is meal delivery to Dungarvan, Abbeyside and as far as Newcastle Co. Tipperary on their Ballymac run. The presentation ended with `Young at Heart` and everyone lifting the roof with their song!

All at the Deise Day Centre wish to thank all Elected representatives, both Local and National that attended on the day, all our partner organisations, our staff, our day centre members and all our volunteers whose assistance is invaluable.

Finally we would like to thank Waterford City and County Council who facilitated the 2019 Pride of Place judging.

Road Closure Arrangements – Waterford Walls Festival 2019

Notice is hereby given that Waterford City and County Council, in exercise of its powers pursuant to Section 75 Roads Act 1993, propose to close the following road to through traffic from 4.00pm on Friday, 23rd August to 12.00am on Sunday, 25th August, 2019 to facilitate the Waterford Walls Festival 2019.

Road to be closed:
• L1502 O’Connell Street (from junction with Thomas Hill L15021 to
junction with Gladstone Street L5501)

Diversion Route:
• No access to Thomas Hill L15021 from Meeting House Lane L15022.
Traffic will be diverted to Gladstone Street L5501 via Sargent’s Lane.
• Thomas Hill will operate one way, northbound only.

Objections or submissions may be made in writing to the Director of Services, Roads, Water and Environment, Waterford City and County Council, City Hall, The Mall, Waterford not later than 4pm on 13th August, 2019.

Reminder: Waterford Poetry Prize 2019

The Arts Office, Waterford City & County Council is pleased to that it is accepting entries for the Waterford Poetry Prize 2019. The Waterford Poetry Prize is open to all writers currently living on the island of Ireland.

The prize will be presented at the Waterford Writers Weekend 25th to 27th October 2019 during the Imagine Arts Festival in Waterford city.

There is no age limit and no entry fee for the Waterford Poetry Prize 2019.

The first prize is €400 plus attendance at a designated writing course at the Molly Keane Writers Retreat, Ardmore in 2019. 2nd prize €300.  3rd prize €200. The closing date for receipt of entries is 12 noon on Monday 2nd September 2019.

Launch of GAA World Games

This Sunday, 28th July, the launch of the Renault World GAA Games 2019 will take place in Waterford city centre.

At 6.30pm, a parade of 1,200 players from across the seven continents will leave Waterside carpark, going via The Apple Market and Michael Street into Arundel Square for 7pm, where the Games will be formally launched.

Then the celebrations commence with entertainment, music and dancing from local and international groups. It promises to be a lively, fun filled, family friendly event which will finish at 9pm. All are welcome.
