“Plastic Oceans” – Environmental track released by Riptide Movement

October 2018 is “Reuse Month”.  National Reuse Month aims to inspire you and provide you with the skills and tools to reuse more At Home, At Work, and At Play.

The Riptide Movement recently worked with Clean Coasts Ireland and released a single entitled ‘Plastic Oceans’. The track aims to spread the serious environmental message that our beaches, coastlines, rivers, cities and towns need to be kept litter and plastic free if society is to help prevent our oceans from becoming more polluted.

Check out what they had to say about plastics in our oceans.

You can make a difference to the amount of plastic in our oceans by reusing items instead of throwing away plastic items after just one use.

Moe Dunford to launch ‘Vikings’ Exhibition in Dungarvan

Moe Dunford on the set of Vikings

Vikings star Moe Dunford will launch the ‘Vikings in Focus’ photo exhibition at the Old Market House Arts Centre, Dungarvan on Culture Night Friday 21st September 2018 at 7.30pm.

This is an exhibition of spectacular ‘behind the scenes’ photo stills taken on the set of internationally acclaimed television series ‘Vikings’ by official photographers Jonathan Hession and Bernard Walsh, who were the official still photographers on the first two series. Dungarvan’s Moe Dunford appeared in the Vikings series in the role of Aethelwulf.

Moe is currently appearing as Fitzgibbon in BLACK 47 directed by Lance Daly for Fastnet Films which premiered at the 2018 Berlin Film Festival and in the Dublin International Film Festival. He is also filming the male lead (John Paul) opposite Sarah Greene in Roddy Doyle’s new feature film ROSIE directed by Paddy Breathnach for Element Films and due for release in 2019.

The continuation of ‘Vikings’ into a sixth series shows how hugely successful the series is in the USA, Canada, UK as well as Scandinavia and Russia. Last year Executive Producer Morgan O’Sullivan picked up an IFTA for Vikings which won Best Drama series. The series was also nominated across several other categories including Best Supporting Actor for Moe Dunford, Best Director Drama for Ciaran Donnelly, Best Production Design for Mark Geraghty and it also won an IFTA for Best Makeup & Hair, a well deserved feat for the outstanding art department and hair & makeup element of the show that at times sees an extensive array of actors and over 600 extras made up for scenes and battle ensembles.

The Old Market House Arts Centre is pleased to host this exhibition until Saturday November 3rd 2018 which is supported by Wicklow County Council in partnership with World 2000 and the Mermaid Arts Centre. All are welcome to come along on Culture Night from 7.30pm to see the stunning images and to enjoy some music.

Admission is free agus tá fáilte roimh gach éinne.

Macdara Ó Faoláin from An Rinn will speak of his experiences making and playing traditional musical instruments, particularly the mandolin and the bouzouki, and he will also play a few tunes on his handmade instruments. This free event, which takes place during lunch hour on Tuesday next, will be of interest to those with an interest in music, woodwork and craftsmanship.

Macdara’s interest in instrument making began when he was given a present of a handmade bouzouki for his 10th birthday. Woodwork classes in his local secondary school, Meánscoil San Nioclás further developed this interest and he also completed a ukulele-making course with master-craftsman Paul Doyle. Since then, Macdara has learned how to make other instruments such as the bouzouki and mandolin in his own style. Minister Ring launches “Our Public Libraries 2022– Inspiring, Connecting and Empowering Communities” Strategy

Govt’s ambitious five year Library Strategy will abolish fines and extend “My Open Library” initiative – Minister Ring

Mr Michael Ring TD, the Minister for Rural and Community Development, today (Thursday 14th June), officially launched the ambitious new five year strategy for Public Libraries in the Lexicon Library, Dún Laoghaire.

Our Public Libraries 2022– Inspiring, Connecting and Empowering Communities is a progressive strategy which aims to improve access, use and visibility of the library as a community hub, and develop the library as a focal point for community and cultural development.

Minister Ring highlighted the vision for the Strategy, which was guided by the public consultation process, as one “of public libraries as attractive and welcoming spaces where all members of the community can access knowledge, ideas and information, and where people can reflect, connect and learn”.

Minister Ring continued: “The overall aim is to increase active library membership from 16% of the population to 30% by end-2022.  It will focus on removing barriers to access by eliminating fines and other charges, and challenging the belief that the library is only for certain sectors of society.

The Strategy will enhance digital and technology capacity across the library service. “In terms of technology, we aim to develop digital learning centres in all suitable libraries and extend the My Open Library Service to up to 100 libraries by 2023; positioning the public library as an invaluable community resource.” Minister Ring said.

Acknowledging the valued role of the librarian in delivering the broad range of services now available, the Minister said “Library staff have been leaders in driving change in our public libraries. I commend your commitment, passion and enthusiasm.”

The five year strategy is a joint initiative of the Department of Rural and Community Development, the County and City Management Association (CCMA) and the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA).

Tom Enright, Chief Executive of Wexford County Council added “As Chair of the Library Development Committee, which has responsibility for overseeing the implementation of this strategy, I look forward to working in partnership  with all local authorities, the Department of Rural and Community Development, the Local Government Management Agency and all stakeholders in its delivery. Over the next five years, I am confident that the measures undertaken with the implementation of the Strategy will deliver an enhanced library service, more integrated, more visible and more accessible in the local community.”

Libraries will work with local partners to reach out to those communities that may not consider the library a place for them and increase communities’ awareness and use of services available.

The strategy is available on the Department’s website www.drcd.gov.ie and is reproduced below.
