Waterford Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards 2017

At an awards ceremony held at Crosshaven Yacht Club on May 22nd, County Waterford’s beaches were awarded with 4 Blue Flag awards and 7 Green Coast awards for 2017.

These awards are only made to bathing areas with excellent water quality and beach management.  Clonea Beach, Dunmore East Main Strand, Dunmore Councillor’s Strand and Tramore were confirmed Blue Flag status and Green Coast awards were achieved for beaches at Guillamene, Newtown Cove, Ballyquin, Curragh, Goat Island, Annestown and Kilfarassy.

Classifications were based on tests carried out on these beaches over the period 2012 – 2016, with a classification of ‘excellent’ being achieved.

Bonmahon and Ardmore are also designated bathing areas and are candidate Blue Flag Beaches with Bonmahon being classified as sufficient and Ardmore as change.  A new wastewater treatment system was commissioned for Ardmore Village in 2015 which should ensure excellent bathing water quality for the coming season and hopefully the Blue Flag will be awarded soon!

County Waterford is renowned for its 100 km long stunning coastline.  For those wishing to walk, jog, swim, explore rock-pools, surf, scuba dive, fish, kite surf, observe wildlife or just relax, there is a place for you!  As part of its efforts to enhance this natural tourism attraction and provide amenities to the public and ensure good water quality, Waterford City & County Council is committed to ongoing management and stringent monitoring of the 30 bathing water areas dotted along the coast.

The major bathing areas are tested at least every 2 weeks, the medium every 4 weeks and the small at least once during the season, which runs from June 1st to September 15th. These results will be published on the EPA and Council websites and local notice board adjacent to the beach.

The Council’s aim is to help all visitors to the beaches and coastal areas enjoy themselves safely amid the stunning natural beauty of the Waterford coastline.  Waterford City & County Council is also considering the development of coastal Blueways along the Waterford coast. Blueways are coastal routes, where water based activities such as snorkelling and kayaking can be enjoyed.

Members of the public and interest groups are encouraged to provide suggestions on beach and coastal management in the county. Anyone interested should send their suggestions by email to bathing@waterfordcouncil.ie

Further information on Waterford bathing waters can be found on the Council’s website www.waterfordcouncil.ie, on the EPA bathing water website http://splash.epa.ie and on local beach notice-boards.

Let’s get out there and enjoy our beautiful coast!

Molly Keane Creative Writing Award Waterford 2017

2017-01-04_1543Since 1998 the Arts Office has been running this national annual Creative Writing Award to celebrate the rich literary life of the late Molly Keane.

Molly lived in Ardmore, Co. Waterford and started writing at a young age to ‘supplement her dress allowance’. Her first ten novels and four plays were published under the pseudonym M.J. Farrell.

She married into the Keane family of West Waterford but sadly her husband died at the age of 36. Molly ceased writing until 1981 when ‘Good Behaviour’ was published under her real name.  It became a publishing sensation and was well received as a masterpiece of black comedy for which she was short-listed for the prestigious Booker Prize in 1981. She died in Ardmore in 1996.

The Arts Office, Waterford City & County Council by kind permission of the Keane family is now inviting entries for a previously unpublished short story for this year’s award.

2016 marked the 10th Anniversary of the Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford part of the An Post Cycle Series, a Sport Ireland initiative of five cycling events throughout Ireland and over 6,000 cyclists took part. Since its inception in 2007 the Sean Kelly Tour has grown from strength to strength and this is the second time we have won this national award beating off stiff competition from the Tour de Burren and the Leinster Loop.

Speaking after the awards, Rosarie Kealy, Co-ordinator, Waterford Sports Partnership said, “I was delighted to accept this award on behalf of the Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford.  It is a great honour for the event to be recognised by Cycling Ireland members as the Best Leisure Cycle in 2016.  It acknowledges the support of all our sponsors, our hard working committee, the contribution from staff in Waterford Sports Partnership and Waterford City and County Council and also the wonderful team of volunteers that make this event possible each year.  We are so proud of this event and delighted with the number of Waterford people that get on their bikes to take part each year”.

“Waterford City and County Council is delighted with this award and feel that it is a fitting acknowledgement and recognition of the huge volunteer effort that goes into this great event” says Michael Walsh, Chief Executive. He added: “every year well over 500 volunteers from communities, towns, villages, clubs and organisations from all over Waterford put their collective shoulders to the wheel and ensure that an extra special ‘Waterford Welcome’ is extended to all 6500 participants. It is now an extremely important part of Waterford’s portfolio of cultural and recreational events while also making a significant local economic impact.”

Art for Buoys Project, Dungarvan

img_1509As part of Waterford City & County Council’s programme to redevelop the landscaping on the roundabouts on the N25 Dungarvan Bypass, the Council’s Environment Department in partnership with the Arts Office, is pleased to announce the result of their call out to artists to submit proposals.

The commission for the buoy at the Cork Road/Youghal road roundabout has been awarded to Dan Leo, a multi-disciplinary artist based in Co. Kilkenny with a maritime inspired piece titled ‘The Undercurrent’. His works span a variety of mediums, from digital illustration to large scale mural work but he is better known for his brushwork on canvas. Dan has a graphic style born from a steady consumption of obscure cultures, cartoons, music and street level art movements.

Dan’s work most often depicts nature and animals in a style that has heavy line work, pattern elements and is bold in colour. Dan’s work has helped him travel and paint across Europe and the USA, he has many significant corporate clients and the Kingfisher piece with Waterford Walls is one of his works locally. Arts Officer, Margaret Organ said that they were pleased to have someone of Dan’s calibre to lead off on this project.

Owing to the high quality of submissions received, two further commissions have been awarded to the artist Brigid Shelly from Ardmore for the buoy beside the Cathy Barry boat on the Cork Road with a Seagull inspired piece. Shona Shirley Macdonald, An Rinn will also be working on a buoy, details of which will be released in the Spring.

Raymond Moloney, SEO Environment Department thanked all the artists who submitted work and said that they planned in 2017 to advertise for submissions for the painting of some more of the remaining buoys in the vicinity.  In the meantime, work on the above commissions will take place over the coming months.

Council remains dedicated to continuing cultural partnership created by Three Sisters Bid

2016-07-15_1118

Members of Waterford City and County Council toady acknowledged the hard and work and dedication of the Three Sisters Bid team who were unsuccessful in their bid for European Capital of Culture (ECoC) 2020.

They also congratulated Galway on their success and wished them all the best in 2020.

The Three Sisters region (Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny) formed an historic partnership in a bid to win the European Capital of Culture 2020. It is the first time in the 31 year history of the European Union’s cultural competition that three counties have united together as equal partners to bid for the title. The unique partnership offers enormous potential through the implementation of a Regional Cultural Strategy, which the three councils unanimously adopted in May this year.

The European selection panel today awarded the ECoC 2020 title to Galway, and despite this disappointing news, the Three Sisters Region is looking forward to a new and exciting future.
