Waterford Bike Week Programme 2017 Launched

Mayor of Waterford City and County Council, Cllr. Adam Wyse recently launched the programme for National Bike Week events on the Waterford Greenway with the help of students from Gael Scoil na nDéise.

Bike Week 2017 will take place from Saturday 10th to Sunday 18th June, with bike related events taking place right around the country. Waterford is no different and in fact, we have a very strong tradition where Bike Week is concerned. In all, there are almost 50 events taking place right across Waterford City and County over the course of the week to suit all ages and fitness levels.

The programme is targeted primarily at those new or returning to cycling or those who just want to enjoy a leisurely spin with friends and family!

Bike Week, which is funded at national level by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, is about celebrating all of the benefits of cycling for both recreation and transport. Those wishing to be part of the fun should find an event in a location to suit all comers.

There are Family Fun Cycles, bike check-ups, community cycles and school cycling events taking place right across Waterford, from Ardsallagh in the west to Faithlegg in the east and many towns and villages in between, as well as Waterford City itself.

Become a Sustainable Energy Community for a safer, healthier more energy efficient environment.  This seminar gives information on supports and grant aid and will help change the way your community thinks about energy.

A Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) is a community in which everyone works together to develop a sustainable energy system for the benefit of the community. SEAI will sign three year partnership agreements to support communities develop sustainable energy communities. SEAI will also provide technical and financial supports to communities.

The Waterford Joint Policing Committee will hold a public meeting on 12th June 2017 in the Park Hotel, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford at 7pm.  The theme is “Improving public safety, crime prevention and personal safety through working with communities”.

Members of the public are welcome to attend.

A workshop will be held followed by answers to questions from members of the public in relation to the theme.  Please be aware that questions submitted in writing in advance of the meeting shall receive priority.  Questions are to be submitted in writing to Colette O’ Brien, Community Department, Bailey’s New Street, Waterford or by email to jpc@waterfordcouncil.ie no later than 4pm on Wednesday 31st May.

Questions will be accepted from any person affected by the policing of the area. Questioners must give their name and address, however this will be kept completely confidential and will not be publicised.  The public are advised that in some cases it may not be possible to provide information or respond to a question for legal reasons, in cases relating to an individual or in relation to information received in confidence by the Gardaí or the local authority, or because to do so would involve the disproportionate use of resources.

We have discovered that not all expressions of interest submitted since Tuesday 25th April 2017 have been received by Waterford City & County Council owing to a slight technical difficulty in our IT systems – this has now been resolved.

Pedal for Port Láirge in the European Cycling Challenge

Sign up and pedal Waterford to the top of the European leaderboard!

The European Cycling Challenge – ECC2017 is a urban cyclists’ team competition. It takes place from 1 to 31 May 2017. It is a challenge among European cities: the City that “rides” the longest total distance wins!  We’re competing for the top spot against 50 other European Regions to see who will earn the Yellow Jersey.

So what do you need to do?
Simply sign up, log your trips during May, and let’s get cycling in Waterford noticed. It doesn’t matter whether you cycle just 5km, or 500kms over the next month, every km counts! The goal is to get out and just enjoy the cycling you do.

You can register for the challenge through the App or through the website (see below). We recommend the App as it will also track your trips once the challenge starts.

Dungarvan Town Centre Improvement Scheme 2017

Waterford City & County Council are pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Dungarvan Town Centre Improvement Scheme 2017.

The scheme is funded by Waterford City & County Council and is an element of the Dungarvan Town Centre Management Groups presentation strategy.

The scheme is an initiative which aims to financially assist and support independent business owners to improve the appearance of their shop fronts/commercial properties. This funding is being provided in recognition of the fact that a building’s facade makes a big impact on our town centres.

Proposals for funding do not have to involve a significant or expensive change. Simple jobs like repainting a shop front or seasonal window dressing may qualify. Each application will be assessed on its own merits and any job that will enhance the town’s character may qualify for grant aid.  Terms and conditions of the scheme are outlined on the application form.

The Scheme is applicable to Dungarvan Town Centre; as defined in the Development Plan 2012-2018, the grant will be applicable to properties within the defined town centre.

Illegal dumping at Owenashad River walk, Lismore

See below some before and after photos which relate to illegal dumping at the Owenashad River walk also known as “the Strand” in Lismore, Co Waterford.

We are currently investigating the material collected and if evidence is available, we will prosecute those responsible. The area is now also under surveillance.

“Sundial” Art work re-installed on Dungarvan’s Causeway

Waterford City & County Council has re-installed an artwork originally commissioned in 1987 by the artist John Burke, titled ‘Sundial’.

It was paid for at the time by the ‘Per Cent for Art Scheme’ for the Shandon Bridge project.

Book of Condolence opened for the late Martin McGuinness

A Book of Condolence has been opened at City Hall, Waterford for the late former Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, Martin McGuinness MLA, RIP.

The book was opened today by both the Mayor of Waterford City & County, Councillor Adam Wyse and the Mayor of the Metropolitan District of Waterford, Councillor John Hearne.

The book is available for the public to sign for a period of one week, between the hours of 9:30am-5pm, in the foyer of City Hall.

Waterford Libraries provides “Work Matters at the Library”, a service offering support for business and employment.  This service includes free access to online business courses as well as a wide variety of business magazines, books and language learning facilities. Support services such as free membership, WiFi and meeting spaces are also available.

Invitation to the Official Opening of Waterford Greenway on March 25th 2017

On Saturday March 25th Waterford Greenway will be officially opened. Mayor Adam Gary Wyse would like to invite you and everybody in Waterford to join us to celebrate this great occasion.

The stunning 46km Waterford Greenway is the longest off-road walking and cycling trail in Ireland.

The opening celebrations will take from 12 Noon till 4pm at three locations below along the length of the Greenway, with free family entertainment, music and a whole host of activities throughout the afternoon.
