Reminder: Local Waste Prevention Grant

This scheme supports communities to take steps on waste prevention, re-use and repair activities in their local areas, and encourage partnership between local businesses, schools, charities and voluntary groups.

What is Waste Prevention? Preventing waste is about finding ways to keep items in use longer and not generating as much waste in the first place.  It’s about rethinking the way we do things – redesigning the items we use – changing attitudes and changing behaviours’ about what we buy and what we throw away, but most of all, working together and thinking creatively to do something about it.

Waterford City and County Council may pay a waste prevention grant to voluntary groups for waste prevention projects in their local community. Please note that outcomes must be measurable. Eligible projects that could be funded include, but are not limited to:

  • Repair Skills Workshops
  • Upcycling Workshops
  • Elimination of single-use items
  • Community composting workshops
  • Food Waste Prevention projects/events

Please note the Councils of the Southern Waste Management Region will be hosting a Re-Use Month in October 2017.  Successfully funded projects must be willing to showcase their results and/or be part of the Re-Use planned events.

Monitoring of access to High Speed Broadband

2016-12-21_1232

The High Speed Broadband Map 2020 [ available here ] shows where high speed broadband services area or will be provided commercially over the next five 5 years.  It also establishes where commercial operators have concrete plans to roll out high speed broadband coverage.

You can use the map to see if you will be covered by commercial operators or are in an area of the country that will be addressed by the State intervention.

The Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE) is actively monitoring the rollout of high speed broadband in the BLUE areas so as to ensure the accuracy of the Map.  If your house or business is in a BLUE area and you do not have access to high speed broadband, the following steps should be undertaken:

1.       Check if your premises is located in an amber or blue area by either

  • Entering your Eircode or
  • Entering your address in the search box or
  • Zooming in on the map.

2.       If your premise is in a BLUE area

If your speed checks are consistently below 30Mbps), you need to:

  • Check with ALL operators in your area to see if you can get high speed broadband.

If you cannot get a high speed broadband service, you need to:

  • Contact the Department – broadband@dccae.gov.ie
  • Include your eircode, a copy of your line speed check results and confirmation of the operators you have contacted.

3.       Subject to your permission, the Department will then:

i.            Raise the query with participating operators whose commercial plans are on the high speed broadband map.

ii.            If commercial plans are yet to materialise, provide you with an approximate timeframe for the availability of high speed broadband to your premises.

Where commercial plans have been rolled out and it is established High Speed Broadband is not available to your premise, nor will it be available from any other operator on a commercial basis, your premise will be included in the AMBER area (Intervention Area).

1916 Commemorations come to a close with unveiling of commemorative monuments

1916
After a busy commemorative year with over 80 events reflecting the 1916 Rising, Waterford’s commemorations will conclude on Thursday, December 22nd with the unveiling of permanent memorials in both Waterford City and Dungarvan.

Reflecting on the 2016 programme, Chairman of the Commemoration Committee Ger Crotty commented “We were particularly pleased with the input from the wider community to the Waterford Commemoration Programme and that includes schools, tidy towns groups, history groups, community groups and youth groups.

There really was something for everyone in the 2016 calendar of events. Along with the dignified flag raising and civic ceremonies, projects from the artistic and Irish language communities including film, theatre, writing and music were very exciting and enhanced the contribution to cultural expression of the 2016 Commemoration in Waterford.”

He went on to say “An open invitation is extended to the general public to the unveiling of both memorials which will take place at The Bishop’s Palace at 11.00 a.m. and the Lookout in Dungarvan at 2.30p.m. on Thursday to mark the culmination of a truly remarkable and memorable centenary commemoration of 1916”.
