Waterford Energy Bureau aims to help the general public and communities to reduce their energy consumption / costs and greenhouse emissions. There is a range of energy efficiency / renewable energy technology grants from Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland and the European Union, which includes:

Home Grants

  1. Better Energy Warmer Home Scheme

    Eligibility Criteria
    To sustain of the Better Energy Warmer Home Scheme, the following terms must be met:
  • You must own and live in your own home that has been built and occupied before 2006.
  • You must receive one of the following:
    • Fuel allowance as part of the National Fuel Scheme
    • Job Seekers Allowance for over six months and have a child under seven years of age
    • Family Income Supplement
    • One-Parent Family payment
    • Domiciliary Care Allowance
  • You must not have received works previously under the warmer Homes Scheme.

    This scheme funds energy efficiency improvements to those homes of vulnerable people in, or at risk of, energy poverty. The improvements offered are:

    • Attic insulation
    • Cavity / External / Dry lining wall insulation
    • Windows and Doors
    • Air-water heat pumps (where suitable)
    • Draught proofing
    • Lagging jackets
    • Low energy light bulbs
    • Energy advice

    Better Energy Homes is a Government programme operated by SEAI which gives grants for energy efficiency upgrades, helping to make your home more comfortable and cheaper to run. It is available to all owners of homes built before 2006 and it regards:

    3. Deep Retrofit Programm

    SEAI have introduced the Deep Retrofit Programme to address the poor energy efficiency of Ireland’s residential sector. SEAI will fund projects that show a comprehensive strategy for significantly improving home energy performance. SEAI are accepting applications from community groups, local authorities and energy agencies but not from individual homeowners.


Community Grants

  • Better Energy Communities Scheme 2019

  • The Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (SEAI) has launched the “Better Energy Communities Scheme 2019”. Funding is available of 30% for private / public sector organisations and up to 50% for not for profit / community groups. Waterford City and County Council / Waterford plan to submit an application in late January 2019 and require project partners, to partake in the funding application. Grant assistance is available for a range of energy efficiency / renewable energy technology upgrades and includes heating system upgrades, air-conditioning upgrades, insulation / building fabric upgrades, heat pumps, solar water / photo voltaic , energy efficient lighting etc.

    Business Grants

    1.Project Assistance Grants

    This scheme helps you to cut costs of energy bills by reducing the energy use. It could bring the following benefits to your organisation:

  • Drop in energy costs
  • Enhancing of the organisation’s reputation and image
  • Improves product competitiveness
  • Improve the knowledge of your employees around reducing energy use
  • Improve your Display Energy Certificate
  • Ability to divert savings to other activities

  • SEAI have introduced the Deep Retrofit Programme to address the poor energy efficiency of Ireland’s residential sector. SEAI will fund projects that show a comprehensive strategy for significantly improving home energy performance. SEAI are accepting applications from community groups, local authorities and energy agencies but not from individual homeowners.


    3. Smart Lighting Pilot

    This scheme is aimed to small and medium-sized enterprises that want to reduce the lighting electricity cost by up to 90%. Businesses with less than 250 employees and an annual turnover of less than €50 million can sustain of this smart lighting scheme.

    4. Other Grants

    Electric Vehicle Grants

    The grant level applies to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) and it depends on the list price of the vehicle. To see the grants available for an EV click here.
