Free TuneFest Summer Lunchtime Sessions at the Old Market House Arts Centre, Dungarvan

If on Thursdays over the summer weeks you want some quality free music, pop into the Old Market House Arts Centre, Lower Main Street, Dungarvan from 12 noon to 1.30pm.

The sessions will feature traditional musicians from the area for you to enjoy as you browse the artwork or simply listen to the music, people are encouraged to come in at whatever time over their lunch break which suits, to catch a tune or a few.

Last month, TuneFest held their annual festival with concerts, workshops and recitals, these new lunchtime sessions will offer visitors the opportunity to hear a variety of musicians and styles over the coming weeks. Bígí linn, Thursdays from midday in the Old Market House Arts Centre, Dungarvan, starting this Thursday 14th July 2022.

Reminder: Book Launch tomorrow – Four Voices

All are welcome to the launch of the poetry book collection, Four Voices: A Conversation on Thursday 16 th June from 6pm – 8pm in Dungarvan Library.

This collection is by four Waterford-based women, Mary McCarthy, Siobhán Mullins, Marie O’Meara and Sherry Young and the publication was assisted by a grant from the Waterford City and County Council Arts Office.

The collection draws upon the experiences of the authors in Ireland, Africa, India and New England. The authors’ status as Irish citizens anchors the literary conversation. Their lives as women, poets and international workers brought them together. The poems reflect the diversity and rich influences of the places and people about which they write. At the launch, Waterford poet Lani O’Hanlon will moderate a short discussion amongst the poets. There will be time for refreshments and conversation.

The books will be on sale in Dungarvan at David Walsh’s on Main Street and The Country Store on Mitchell Street. You can find it in Waterford at The Book Centre on Barronstrand Street.

Taking Pride in Waterford City and County

June 1st marked the first day of Pride Month as Waterford City and County Council celebrates LGBTQ+ people, culture and communities.

On June 1st Mayor of Waterford City and County Cllr. Joe Kelly, along with members of the Dungarvan Pride committee raised the Pride flag outside the Dungarvan Civic Offices to officially launch the start of Pride month.

Dungarvan town centre was adorned with Pride banners in Grattan Square, with almost 800 ft of Pride bunting along Main Street, O Connell St, Meagher St and along the Causeway.

As part of Pride Month celebrations Dungarvan’s first ever Pride Festival will take place in Walton Park, Dungarvan on June 18th.

Emilene Stafford, Dungarvan Pride committee co-chair, is looking forward to Dungarvan’s inaugural Pride Festival.  “While the day is about celebrating LGBTQ+ people, it is a day to be enjoyed and celebrated by everyone.  We would encourage young and old, gay and straight to come along and help us make this Pride festival one of the biggest and brightest in the country.”

The line-up includes an opening ceremony by Lady Fi Fi Fondu, a dance performance by the Kirby School of Performing Arts, circus mayhem from the Wobbly Circus, the ultimate lip sync battle,  music by Avi and the Dream Girls Drag Show to round off the entertainment.

In Waterford city, The Pride of the Déise committee has organised a jam-packed weekend celebration of LGBTQ+ people and communities.  Running from Friday, June 3rd to Monday, June 6th, the programme includes Bubble Talk; A Consent Workshop with Miss Gay Ireland, Pride March from Cathedral Square to the Cultural Quarter, GAYREA Youth Pride Party, PRIDE Ride Greenway Cycle and Rural Pride celebration.

Waterford City & County Council seek applications from suitably experienced candidates in road surfacing and road surface repair works for the role of Machinery Operator/Driver/General Operative.

Duties will include handwork (raking & shovelling) of hot macadam, as well as the operation of plant, machines and equipment used in road surfacing and repair works, including lorries, pavers, planers, rollers, tar sprayers, chipping, spreader and mechanical pot-hole repair vehicles. The role will be based in the Machinery Yard, Dungarvan. Duties may also include the operation of winter maintenance vehicles.

Dungarvan celebrates with first ever PRIDE Festival

On Saturday, June 18th, Dungarvan’s first ever PRIDE Festival will take place in Walton Park, Dungarvan.

A celebration of LGBTQ+ people and culture, the event boasts a fun and exciting programme filled with music, food, family fun, magic and drag!

Emilene Stafford, one of the committee’s co-chairs, is looking forward to Dungarvan’s inaugural PRIDE Festival.  “While the day is about celebrating LGBTQ+ people, it is a day to be enjoyed and celebrated by everyone.  We would encourage young and old, gay and straight to come along and help us make this PRIDE festival one of the biggest and brightest in the country.”

“The programme has something for everyone.  Along with the great music and entertainment, there will be a real festival vibe to the day as people can picnic in the park and soak up the electric atmosphere.”

New murals on display at performance space in Fairlane Park, Dungarvan

Waterford City and County Council enlisted The Walls Project (the company behind Waterford Walls) to work with students in four Dungarvan secondary schools to create these murals for the new outdoor performance space in Fairlane Park, Dungarvan.

Facilitating artists Magda Karol and Jorge Ruiz worked with four groups of talented young artists to produce eight artworks to adorn the concrete benches at the space, with a theme of ‘the beauty and heritage of Dungarvan’. The students have produced some fantastic, eye-catching work and really captured the essence of Dungarvan and what it has to offer.
