Ten flags flown at Waterford’s Blue and Green Coast beaches

Waterford’s coastline was recently recognised by An Taisce as three beaches were awarded the prestigious Blue Flag and seven the Green Coast Award Flags.

The Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognised awards for beaches. The programme promotes environmental education, sustainable development of tourism, environmental management systems and ensure safety and access for beach users.

According to Katia Hunter, Executive Scientist with Waterford City and County Council, the awarding of the Blue and Green Coast Flags is a great endorsement of Waterford’s coastline.

“The beaches that received the Blue Flag in 2023 are Ardmore, Clonea and Tramore beaches.  All of these beaches not only returned excellent bathing water results, but a series of stringent environmental and safety-related criteria were also met.

“The Green Coast flags were awarded to Annestown, Ballyquin, Curragh, Goat Island Beach, Guillamene Cove, Newtown Cove and Kilfarrassey, as they all demonstrated excellent water quality, and were appropriately maintained and managed to ensure the protection of the natural environment.”

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. John O’ Leary commended not only the Local Authority’s Environment Department, but also the work of voluntary groups that dedicate themselves to ensuring an unspoilt environment for all to enjoy.

“The work of volunteers from groups such as Clean Coasts, Tidy Towns, and ecological groups, have made huge inroads in assisting in the maintenance and management of our coastline and its amenities.

“These volunteers are passionate about preserving our natural environment, whether it’s through litter picking, wildlife conservation management or developing educational programmes.  By enhancing our natural amenities, they are heightening the enjoyment we can all derive from our beaches and coastline.”

Blue Flag began in Ireland in 1988 with 19 beaches and 2 marinas being awarded. Since then, the Blue Flag programme has grown from strength to strength with 84 beaches and 10 marinas being awarded in 2023.

Each year Blue Flag is awarded to over 4,500 beaches, marinas and sustainable boating tourism operators in 49 countries globally. Beaches are awarded for the bathing season (June 1st to September 15th in Ireland) and marinas are awarded for up to 12 months, depending on their period of operation. The awarded sites for Ireland are announced at the end of May each year.

Accessibilty Swings installed in Waterford parks

Waterford City and County Council recently completed the installation of three wheelchair accessible swings at the People’s Park in Waterford city, Walton Park in Dungarvan and the Inclusion Park in Tramore.

Mayor of Waterford City and County Cllr. John O’Leary welcomed the addition of the accessibility swings to the three sites. “These pieces of equipment are more than just swings, they are integral in promoting inclusivity, and providing children with disabilities or mobility issues equal access to playground facilities.”

“Judging by the smiles on the faces of the students and staff of St. John’s Special School, there’s no doubt that the accessibility swing in Walton Park is already a big hit with the children.”

The swings, which have a capacity for two wheelchairs and up to eight people are accessible 24/7, without key access or the need for a harness.  Located centrally in each park, the swings are part of the Council’s initiative to encourage inclusive play and social interaction.

Jennie Moore, Teacher at St. John’s Special School in Dungarvan added, “The accessibility swing is a fantastic addition to Walton Park. While there are so many great playground facilities in the locality, the addition of this newest piece of equipment is to be welcomed.

“Already our students are reaping the rewards of being able to play together and the fact that we can access the swing whenever we are in the park is a bonus. We are currently planning school trips with our students and the accessibility swings in the city and Tramore are certainly on our to-visit list!”

Sean Gormley, Executive Engineer with Waterford City and County Council explains the idea behind the swings. “Within the last few years, the Council has been committed to promoting inclusive social interaction.  These swings are designed with plenty of capacity, so not only can two wheelchair users use the swing at the same time, they can also do it with friends or family members for a much more interactive play experience.

“Playgrounds are the ideal place for fun and social interaction, and that choice should be available for all children to enjoy together.”

The overall cost of the three accessibility swings was €75,000 with Waterford City and County Council receiving funding from the Disability Participation and Awareness Fund 2021 administered by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth.

Works were completed earlier this month by contractors Browne Brothers Site Services.

Silver for residents of Tramore’s An Garrán

An Garrán residents’ association in Tramore was named as runner-up at the All-Island IPB Pride of Place awards last weekend.

The awards, hosted by Dublin City Council and held in the Clayton Hotel in Dublin, celebrate the best in community development, and recognise the efforts of people in making their local neighbourhoods better places to live, work and socialise.

An Garrán residents’ association was nominated by Waterford City and County Council, in the Urban Neighbourhood (Under 3,000) category.

Speaking following the awards ceremony An Garrán’s spokesperson, Katariina Bent was delighted with the accolade. “Initially we started out as a small group to keep the estate tidy, but soon realised that we needed to form a residents’ association to achieve more and to reach more residents.

“With the help of Waterford City and County Council’s Estate management team we formed a committee, and this gave us the focus to engage directly with the residents of the estate and access more supports and funding.

“Estates Manager with the Council, Eamonn O’Leary was invaluable in the assistance he gave us in encouraging a great community spirit and helping us build a safe, inclusive, secure place for all the families living here.”

Built in 2009, An Garrán is a joint venture between Waterford City and County Council and Tuath Housing.

Eamonn O’Leary, Waterford City and County Council, congratulated the residents’ association on its award.  “What’s great about An Garrán is the enthusiasm and drive the residents have in creating and maintaining an estate that they all proudly call home.

“The Council nominated An Garrán last Autumn not only because we have built strong and enduring relationships with the committee and the residents there, but we are as committed as they are to continuing the excellent work that has been done over the last fifteen years.”

Eamonn continued, “One of the highlights over the years must be the outdoor fun day last summer to celebrate European Neighbours’ Day.  With music, fun activities, a biodiversity area and an estate clean-up, it really was an example of how the residents have created a warm, welcoming place for young and old.”

The awards, hosted by RTE’s Marty Whelan, took place in in front of 400 community volunteers from across the island.

Sponsored by IPB Insurance, the Pride of Place competition was initiated 20 years ago though a Co-operation Ireland programme to acknowledge the invaluable work undertaken by volunteers and those involved in local community development.

It has grown into the largest competition recognising community development achievements on the island of Ireland.
