Reopening of the Applemarket, Waterford – Changes in Traffic Flow
FROM TODAY, MONDAY 24TH JULY 2017
(Waterford City Centre Urban Renewal Scheme Part VIII 08/15)
The Applemarket will be officially opened to the public on Friday 21st July and will be reopened to traffic from Monday 24th July. From Monday the following traffic flow changes will come into operation:
- Stephen Street – traffic flow will be one way southbound only from its junction at Patrick Street to its junction with Newgate Street.
- New Street – traffic flow will be one way westbound from its junction with the Apple Market to its junction with Johns Lane/New Street.
- Patrick Street – traffic flow will be one way eastbound from its junction with Mayor’s Walk to its junction with Stephen Street.
A map detailing these traffic changes is included below.

As a taxi driver I find it a bit annoying to go via Alexander Street and Bachelor’s Walk to get from Peter Street to Ballybricken. I agree with the taxi rank been moved to Patrick Street because most taxi drivers ignored the signal system on Lady Lane and taxis were illegally parking in Bakehouse Lane obstructing the footpath. One future change I’d suggest is that when construction of the City Square extension is completed the bus stop on Peter Street be relocated to Arundel Square, the footpaths on Peter Street widened, and the taxi rank moved to the opposite side of Peter Street. Presently it is annoying to the taxi customers having the passenger side of the taxis facing the road and it’s causing difficulty for disabled taxi customers. Another suggestion would be having Bachelor’s Walk one-way with traffic flowing from Stephen Street to Mayor’s Walk. Also Convent Hill really needs to be one-way from Rice Park to Barrack Street because it’s junction at Barrack Street is too narrow to be two-way.
