Reminder: Amnesty for Bulky Goods, Tramore

Bulky Amnesty Day Tramore

In October, Waterford City and County Council will introduce three days of amnesty for bulky household items.

The bulky goods amnesty applies to items such as couches, mattresses, beds and other large items belonging to domestic householders and can be deposited for free in Lismore, Kilmacthomas and Tramore.

Welcoming the initiative, Ella Ryan, Environmental Education Officer with Waterford City and County Council said, “The objective of this amnesty is to give people the opportunity to get rid of large household furniture for free and to support anti-dumping intervention projects and the recycling of bulky goods.

“Waterford City and County Council has been particularly successful in prosecuting those responsible for illegally dumping household waste and bulky goods.  The reason we are proactive in pursing these perpetrators is because bulky goods that are illegally dumped have an adverse effect on the environment…they are unsightly, difficult and costly to remove, and generally serve to encourage further dumping in that area.”

Ms Ryan added, “While large goods such as furniture, couches, wardrobes, bedframes and mattresses will be accepted, items such as trampolines and toys, waste electrical items and construction and demolition waste will not be accepted.”

The Bulky Goods Amnesty days take place at:

  • The Water Depot in Owbeg, Lismore from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, October 5th
  • The Roads Depot in Scrahan, Kilmacthomas from 10am to 1pm on Saturday October 12th
  • Civic Amenity Site in Tramore from 10am to 1pm on Saturday October 19th

Uisce Éireann advises Portlaw community of road closure to facilitate essential works

Portlaw Road Closure Sept 2024

Uisce Éireann wishes to advise motorists of a road closure in Portlaw starting Monday 23 September to facilitate a project to improve water quality and reduce leakage.

To facilitate these critical works, a section of Priest’s Lane (L-4034), from the junction with the R680 to the junction with Upper Brown Street/Carrick Road Lower will be closed for two weeks. Works will be ongoing from 7am to 7pm from Monday 23 September to Sunday 6 October inclusive.

The road will open each evening from 7pm to 7am and local and emergency services access will be maintained at all times.

Local diversions will be in place and traffic flows will be diverted via Carrick Road Lower, Carrick Road (L-4033) and the R680. See attached map for diversion route.

Uisce Éireann’s Leakage Reduction Programme Manager, Dave Murphy thanked the community for their patience and co-operation in advance of the works saying “We acknowledge that traffic diversions and road closures can be inconvenient for the local community and our crews will make every effort to minimise disruption. This project is essential to ensure Portlaw’s security of supply now and into the future.”

For more information on this project, visit our Portlaw project page.

This project forms part of Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme and will help us achieve our 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The National Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. We are investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 – fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply. For more information, please visit www.water.ie/reducingleaks

Uisce Éireann is committed to keeping customers informed across multiple platforms 24/7 and we encourage customers to engage with us through our website, X channels @IWCare and @IrishWater, on Facebook and LinkedIn and through our customer care helpline which is open 24/7 on 1800 278 278. Abbey Road – Temporary Road Closure Extension

Ferrybank Road Closure

BAM, the main contractor on the North Quays Public Infrastructure Project, has advised Waterford City and County Council that the current road closure on Abbey Road will require a two-week extension to Friday, August 30th.  The extension is to facilitate essential works for a deep foul sewer, new retaining wall and finishing works.

BAM has apologised for the inconvenience saying, “We are endeavouring to complete the works in as efficient and timely manner as practical, while also giving consideration to the numerous other unforeseen factors affecting the works in this area. We are conscious of and regret the disruption to the traffic flows, particularly as the school term commences.  We have contacted local schools and businesses in the area, informing them of the extended closure period.”

Whilst Waterford City and County Council stipulated that BAM complete the works over a seven-week period during the school summer holidays, to avoid disruption to school traffic, the Council has been advised that the full closure of Abbey Road until August 30th is unavoidable to complete these works.

The extension to the closure is disappointing and Waterford City and County Council regrets the disruption that will be caused at the start of the new school term, as well as the ongoing disruption to local residents, businesses and bus services. It is also recognised that the

works must be completed in a safe and orderly manner within a confined works area.

Businesses in the area will continue to operate / trade as normal.  Access will continue to be provided for pedestrians across the site during the extended closure, and local vehicular access points will remain operable on either side of the works. School access will continue to be available from the Fountain Street side of the works and arrangements will be in operation to assist school traffic. Traffic from the Christendom and Abbey Park side of the closure will continue to be diverted to the N29 / Port road.

Please follow all directional signage and utilise designated pedestrian crossings.
