Council investigates illegal dumping at Ballylaneen
Waterford City and County Council is investigating a serious case of illegal dumping and is appealing for information from the public.
On Monday, December 15th, Environmental Inspectors came across a site near the village of Ballylaneen, Bonmahon which had been subject to a considerable volume of illegal dumping.
The dumping appears to have occurred over the past few weeks and Waterford City and County Council is asking anyone who may have witnessed suspicious vehicles carrying waste, or have dashcam footage from the area to contact them on 0818 10 20 20 or by emailing contact@waterfordcouncil.ie. All information will be treated as confidential.
Niall Kane, Senior Executive Engineer with Waterford City and County Council Environment Section said, “This bears all the hallmarks of an unauthorised ‘man in a van’ operator. These illegal operators often advertise on social media and may seem to offer good value, but your waste could end up dumped like this. Before engaging someone to remove your waste you should always check to ensure they have a waste collection permit.”
To check if a collector has a waste collection permit:
- Check their permit on the National Waste Collection Permit Office website, www.nwcpo.ie
- Ask the operator to see a copy of their waste collection permit as they are required to carry it with them
All legitimate waste collectors are required to have their name and permit number on their vehicle.
Mr Kane added, “All people are responsible for their waste until it is disposed of correctly. If you give your waste to an inappropriate person, and they dump it, you could face prosecution.”
If anyone recognises this waste and thinks they may have given it to a waste collector, please contact Waterford City and County Council on 0818 10 20 20 or by emailing contact@waterfordcouncil.ie
