Waterford Poetry Prize 2019
The Arts Office, Waterford City & County Council is pleased to that it is accepting entries for the Waterford Poetry Prize 2019. The Waterford Poetry Prize is open to all writers currently living on the island of Ireland.
The prize will be presented at the Waterford Writers Weekend 25th to 27th October 2019 during the Imagine Arts Festival in Waterford city.
There is no age limit and no entry fee for the Waterford Poetry Prize 2019.
The first prize is €400 plus attendance at a designated writing course at the Molly Keane Writers Retreat, Ardmore in 2019. 2nd prize €300. 3rd prize €200. The closing date for receipt of entries is 12 noon on Monday 2nd September 2019.

Waterford Airport welcomes Government funding for runway
The chairman and board of Waterford Airport today (11 June 2019) warmly welcomed the announcement of funding approval by Government for the lengthening and widening of the airport’s runway.
This investment will secure the future of Waterford Airport and allow it to compete for international carriers using jet engine aircraft.
Work will commence immediately on progressing the runway extension and a planning application will be lodged for the extension of the northern end and the runway widening. Planning permission is already in place for extension of the southern end.
Funding from a combination of private investors, local authorities and the Government will deliver the additional infrastructure subject to the agreement of existing airport shareholders at an EGM to be held shortly. The proposal is also subject formal approval by the local authorities in Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny.
Dan Browne, chairman of Waterford Airport, said: “The extension of the runway at Waterford Airport is a game-changer for the future of Waterford Airport and the southeast region we serve. It represents a departure in regional aviation in Ireland with the private sector and local authorities acting in partnership to bring a new commercial focus to airport operations.
The investment by the private sector of €5m is also a first in regional aviation in Ireland and the bringing together of aviation and construction expertise in the form of Conor McCarthy of Leadcom Ltd and Noel Frisby of Frisby Construction, along with strong international enterprises from the region in the form of Glanbia, Coolmore Stud, Dawn Meats, Stafford Wholesale and Waterford Distillery represents a new focus on the future commercial viability of the Airport.”
Cllr John Pratt, Mayor of Waterford, also welcomed the announcement: “Waterford, Kilkenny and Wexford local authorities have long argued that a viable regional airport is vital for the region. The funding of the runway extension is a further boost to the momentum being generated in the economy of Waterford and the southeast as a whole.
“We can now look forward to the airport contributing positively to economic activity in the region, through its services to the public and business alike. We especially welcome the contribution the airport can make to inbound tourism and believe the new entity can bring further exposure and access for visitors to the wonderful landscape, heritage assets and amenities available in this beautiful corner of the world.”
Bathing prohibition remains at Kilmurrin Cove
Following retests, the bathing water restrictions at Ardmore and Counsellors Strand are now lifted with immediate effect.
The no bathing advice for Kilmurrin Cove remains in place until further notice.

This is due to high bacterial counts detected earlier this week, following heavy rain.
Further advice will be issued when retest results become available.

Notice of making of a Vesting Order
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Waterford City & County Council (hereinafter called “the Council”) has pursuant to the powers vested in it by Section 80 of the Housing Act, 1966,as applied by Section 10 of the Local Government (No.2) Act 1960 (as substituted by Section 86 of the Housing Act 1966) on the 4th day of June 2019 made a Vesting Order whereby the lands specified in the Schedule hereto will on the 11th day of July 2019 VEST in the Council in fee simple free from encumbrances and all estate rights titles and interests of whatsoever kind.
AND FURTHER TAKE NOTICE that a map of the said lands and a copy of the said Vesting Order have been deposited in the Offices of the Council and may be seen between 9.30 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.,
Monday to Friday at: Customer Services Dept, Baileys New Street, Waterford and at the Customer Services Dept, Civic Offices, Dungarvan.
Africa Day 2019 @ Waterford Cultural Quarter
Waterford City and County Council will host a series of activities at Waterford’s Cultural Quarter in O’Connell Street on Thursday the 6th of June 2019 from 11am to 3pm, to mark Africa Day 2019, which is supported by Irish Aid and the Department of Foreign Affairs
The programme of events will aim to better inform the indigenous population about the diverse, rich and colourful African Culture in Waterford. A variety of musicians and acts are set to entertain in an open air environment with genres ranging from traditional African music, Coco Fiesta, Gospel Choir to modern dance and hip hop.
There will be plenty of activities for children including a mini-farm, wobbly circus with stilt walkers, balloons and hula hoops, baby boogie and face painting. On street craft demonstrations will include a Berber market, produce stalls and an instrument workshop and much more. Why not come along and experience the event for yourself.
Mayor of Waterford launches the Spick and Span Awards 2019

Applications to enter the Waterford City and County Council Spick and Span Awards 2019 will open from the 1st June to the 21st June. Residents associations and community groups in local authority housing estates are now invited to register. The judging will take place between the 8th July and the 5th August.
The Waterford City and County Council Spick and Span Awards is a competition to acknowledge the selfless work done by individuals, residents associations and communities that go to great lengths to improve and enhance their estates by keeping them clean and well presented.
Application forms are available at Waterford City and County Council Customer Service desks at Baileys New Street, Waterford City or the Civic Offices Dungarvan. Alternatively you can register online at waterfordcouncil.ie.
The Waterford City and County Council Spick and Span Awards categories will be judged on an area basis, with winning entrants from each of the council administrative areas. The ultimate aim of the competition is to achieve a cleaner, greener environment and attractively presented estates and open areas that will benefit all residents and visitors to their areas.
Spot check judging will take place throughout judging period (8th July – 5th August), with a final decision on the 17th August 2019. There will be a family fun day held for all the estate entries and their residents, to present awards and as a thank you for all who took part!
The initiative will be actively supported by Waterford City & County Council, further information on judging criteria and available supports will be supplied to all entrants.

Directly Elected Mayor Plebiscite: Statement
There has been much media and public commentary regarding the distribution of leaflets relating to the Directly Elected Mayor plebiscite, with suggestion that the executive of Waterford City and County Council deliberately or otherwise failed to distribute leaflets to all households.
For the avoidance of doubt this Council would wish to clarify that it had no involvement whatsoever in the delivery of leaflets to households.
The committee established to oversee the plebiscite information campaign agreed that the Department of Housing Planning & Local Government (DHPLG) would take full responsibility for the delivery of the information booklets to all the households across the three Local Authorities rather than the individual authorities so doing. Following a competitive tendering process, the DHPLG appointed a company to deliver the booklets across the three Local Authorities. Waterford City & County Council were not responsible for the tendering, award or performance of this contract.
