Waterford City and County Council issues 86 litter fines from CCTV in six weeks
Waterford City and County Council has issued 86 litter fines in the first six weeks of operation of its new CCTV enforcement system targeting illegal dumping and littering.
The cameras were installed at ten locations in the Metropolitan district in November, with plans to rotate the units to other locations across the county to both detect and deter illegal dumping.
Following the review and processing of footage, fines started to be issued in January.
Dawn Wallace, Senior Executive Officer with Waterford City and County Council said, “A significant number of these incidents are happening at our bring banks. People need to understand that it is not acceptable to leave items on the ground beside bring banks. Once material is left on the ground it cannot be recycled and ends up going to landfill.
“If the bring bank is full please use an alternative site or return at another time. Leaving items beside the banks is considered littering and those responsible may receive a litter fine.”
Ms. Wallace added, “Most surprising was that some people have been fined on multiple occasions for dumping the same bring banks, coming back again and again, and leaving items on the ground. That is not acceptable. The Council relies on the goodwill of communities and businesses hosting our bring banks. Continued dumping at these sites can make people reluctant to host them, which will affect the entire community and our recycling goals.”
