Boil Water Notice – Ring & Helvick areas

IrishWaterIt has come to the attention of Irish Water and Waterford City & County Council that the Ring/Helvick Scheme is/may be contaminated.

On the advice of the Health Service Executive and as a precautionary measure pending further investigation, a boil water notice is being issued in these areas. Accordingly, in the interest of public health, it is recommended that all users on the  Ring/Helvick Water Supply Scheme boil their water before use.

How long before the boil water notice can be lifted?
We do not know at present, but Irish Water and Waterford City & County Council will continue to liaise with the Health Service Executive with a view to lifting the Boil Water Notice as soon as practicable.

Public Libraries are changing – Introduction of Sierra

f00001063_lowresPublic Libraries in Ireland are changing. These exciting changes will bring a bigger and better service. Library membership in all public libraries is now free to all.

This July, Waterford City & County Libraries, with 12 other participating library services around the country, are introducing a new computer system and creating a joint library catalogue. These changes will help us provide a better service to our library users.

  • It will be easier to search and request items, and get recommendations, using the new shared library catalogue.
  • There will be a much wider range of books and other items to choose from.
  • Library members can borrow 12 items (including DVDs) for 3 weeks from any branch of the participating public libraries.
  • There is no charge to reserve up to 12 items at any time.
  • Books and DVDs can be returned to any of the 176 branches of the participating library services.
  • Reminders will be sent by email, to let you know that your books and DVDs are due back, that items you requested are ready for collection, and to let you know about library events.
  • You can reserve and renew books and other items 24/7 using our online service.

Parking promotion for the Summer in Waterford City

FREE-PARKINGIf you’re going out in Waterford, and planning on having a drink, you can now park in Bolton St or Millar’s Marsh car park after 6:30pm and get a free parking ticket from our pay and display machines to provide free parking until 12.00 noon the following day.

No need to worry about getting a parking ticket, or driving early in the morning while over the limit.

Park after 6.30 any evening in either Millar’s Marsh or Bolton St car parks and just push the green button on the pay and display machine and it will give you a free parking ticket to display, collect your car anytime up to 12.00pm (midday).

Together we can reduce illegal dumping

litterTogether we can help reduce the spate of littering incidents around our towns, villages and countryside.

On a daily basis, our Environment teams are out cleaning up illegal littering and roadside dumping.

It happens in our scenic Comeragh mountains, on the sides of our highways and byways and right in the heart of our city and towns.

If you see illegal dumping, please report it to our litter hotline and your call will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

35, The Mall, opens as Economic Development hub

2016-06-29_1109Waterford City and County Council have celebrated the official opening of 35 The Mall, the new home of their Economic Development Department and the Local Enterprise Office.

Following two years of renovations, Mayor of Waterford City and County Council, Cllr. John Cummins, officially opened the premises on Tuesday 28th June 2016.  The building, which is an early 20th Century purpose-built commercial Edwardian structure of architectural and artistic interest, is built on the site of an earlier Georgian town house.

Strategically located within the city centre at the confluence of two main thoroughfares – the junction of The Mall and Lombard Street – and linked with No.’s 3 & 4 Lombard Street, the building stands as a substantial prominent structure with significant internal space.

National Recreation Week, 3rd to 9th July

PrintWaterford Sports Partnership, in conjunction with Waterford City and County Council,
are working in partnership with the GAA to coordinate a range of activities for National
Recreation Week which will take place from Sunday 3rd July to Saturday 9th July.

National Recreation Week is funded by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and
this year’s theme will focus on “Remembering 1916”.

A little bit of Waterford on Aer Lingus this summer

The award winning documentary on the Waterford travel writer Dervla Murphy is taking to the skies this summer.

‘Who is Dervla Murphy?’, a feature length documentary produced by Mixed Bag Media in association with the Arts Office, Waterford City & County Council will screen on all Aer Lingus transatlantic flights from August through to September.

Commenting on the announcement Director Garret Daly said that it’s a great way for visitors to Ireland to  experience a unique and fascinating icon of Irish society by watching the film and discovering her work. Following a very successful cinema release the film will also debut on DVD and VOD August 1st.

Waterford Arts Officer, Margaret Organ said that ‘From day one we knew that this project was going to be a winner. Dervla Murphy is Ireland’s most prolific travel writer. This production gives a wonderful insight into the woman and the writer who has her home in Lismore, Co. Waterford.

Molly Keane Creative Writing Award 2016 – winner announced

Waterford City & County Council’s Arts Office is pleased to announce that the winner of the national Molly Keane Creative Writing Award 2016 is Niamh MacCabe  from  Co. Leitrim with a short story titled ‘Golden Stone Territory’.

Niamh MacCabe was born in Dublin. She grew up in Paris, in north-west Ireland, and in Washington DC, where she graduated as a visual artist from the Corcoran School of Art. She worked overseas in the Animated Film industry. She now lives in North Leitrim with her two children.

Previously she has been highly commended in the Books Ireland Magazine Award, got a Special Mention in the Galley Beggar Press Award, came second in the People’s College Competition, was shortlisted for the Allingham Festival Flash Fiction Prize and the Carried in Waves Award. She was longlisted for the Fish Short Story and Fish Memoir Prizes.

In 2016, Niamh won second place in the Bare Fiction Magazine Award, got a Special Mention in the Fabula Press Nivalis Competition, was shortlisted for the Fish Prize, the Cúirt New Writing Award and Mslexia Short Story Competition, she was longlisted for the Colm Toibín Short Story Award and was a Finalist in the Atlantis Short Story Competition.

She is published in the  Aesthetica Anthology, The Incubator Journal, and Bare Fiction Magazine.

Niamh MacCabe’s story ‘Golden Stone Territory’ is the nineteenth winner of the Molly Keane Creative Writing Award run by Waterford City & County Council’s Arts Office with support from the Arts Council and by kind permission of the Keane family. Niamh read her winning story at a presentation ceremony during the IMMRAMA Festival, Lismore (18/6/2016) and was presented with prize money of €500 and a commemorative scroll.

Margaret Organ, Arts Officer also extended congratulations to the Waterford writers who were awarded bursary support to attend the annual Molly Keane Writers Retreat Week in Ardmore this August. The recipients are James Hyde, Lismore and Emma Penruddock, Clashmore.

Road Closure Notices – Kilmacthomas & Balleighteragh

    from 7 p.m. on Friday 22nd July to 7 a.m. on Saturday 23rd July 2016, to facilitate the construction of an overbridge at Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford as part of the Waterford Greenway project.

Waterford Bike Week Programme Launched!

2016-06-15_1101National Bike Week 2016 will take place from Saturday 11th to Sunday 19th June, with bike related events taking place right around the country. Waterford is no different and in fact, we have a very strong tradition where Bike Week is concerned.

In all there are 37 events taking place right across Waterford City and County over the course of the week to suit all ages and fitness levels.  More information is available here.

The programme is targeted primarily at those new or returning to cycling or those who just want to enjoy a leisurely spin with friends and family!
