Starting tomorrow : Road resurfacing on Parnell St & Manor St

Waterford City and County Council wishes to advise that road resurfacing works will commence on Parnell Street and Manor Street tomorrow Monday, October 17th.

The works will take place from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday until Friday, October 28th.

Both Parnell Street and Manor Street will reopen to traffic each evening from 7pm and fully at weekends.

The following diversions will be in place:

Traffic coming into the city from the Cork Road:

From tomorrow, October 17th to October 28th traffic coming into the City from the Cork Road will be diverted right onto the R675 Tramore Road and then left onto the R709 Inner Ring Road at the Tramore Round Roundabout. Traffic will follow the Inner Ring Road to the Folly Roundabout and turn left towards the R708 Ballytruckle Road.  Follow the R708 along South Parade and Catherine Street and finally turning right onto the R680 The Mall.

Traffic coming out of the city from the Mall:

From October 17th to October 21st traffic coming out of the City from the R680 The Mall will continue straight onto Parnell Street and turn left onto the R680 Johnstown. Traffic will turn right at the traffic lights onto the R708 Ballytruckle Road and follow the diversion the Folly Roundabout. Diverted traffic will turn right onto the R709 Inner Ring Road and continue to the Tramore Road Roundabout. Traffic can turn right towards the City centre onto the R680 or straight on to the RSC Roundabout turning left onto the R680 Cork Road heading out of the City.

From October 24th to October 28th traffic coming out of the City from the R680 The Mall will turn left onto the R708 Catherine Street. Traffic will follow the R708 Ballytruckle Road as far as the Folly Roundabout. Diverted traffic will turn right onto the R709 Inner Ring Road and continue to the Tramore Road Roundabout. Traffic can turn right towards the City centre onto the R680 or straight on to the RSC Roundabout turning left onto the R680 Cork Road heading out of the City.

Local access will be maintained onto The Manor and Parnell Street for the duration of the road closures.

If possible, road users should avoid the area for the duration of these works.

Some bus routes will be impacted by the diversions and full details will be available on the Bus Eireann website.

‘Spooky Tunnel’ returns to Waterford Greenway in 2022!

Following on from the huge success of the ‘Spooky Tunnel’ at Ballyvoyle on the Waterford Greenway for Halloween 2018 and 2019, Waterford City and County Council is organising a similar spooky experience that you won’t want to miss this year.

The 2022 ‘Spooky Tunnel’ experience will be in place for the public to enjoy from Friday 28th October to Thursday 3rd November.

This Halloween installation is free to attend. It is a ‘walk through experience’ that promises to be a sight to behold for all age groups! This years’ experience promises to be extra special as it sees the return of this popular event following a break due to pandemic restrictions in 2020 and 2021.

Ballyvoyle Tunnel, is an almost 400 metre-long brick lined tunnel, which was constructed during the 1870’s. It’s dimly lit recesses and arched ceiling are fantastically atmospheric at any time of year and form the perfect backdrop for a ‘spooktacular’ Halloween themed display. 2018 was the first year of the experience and people were blown away by the sights and sounds of Samhain! Word of mouth quickly spread about the experience and visitor figures recorded at the tunnel were over twice those recorded for the same period in late October 2017. This was replicated and even surpassed in 2019. All involved are anticipating a similar response from members of the public this year.

Commenting on the return of the ‘Spooky Tunnel’ Cllr. John O’Leary, Mayor of Waterford City and County said that, “It is absolutely fantastic to see the return of the Spooky Tunnel once again this year. This has been a Halloween event which is unique to Waterford Greenway. It highlights how the Greenway has continued to evolve over the years and offer a visitor experience that sets it apart from other amenities. Best of luck to all involved!”

The spooky tunnel experience will once again add greatly to other Halloween themed events taking place along Waterford Greenway including the fantastically atmospheric and scary ‘Wicked Woods’ event at Carriganore Woods, near SETU; along with events at Waterford Suir Valley Railway and at Coach House Coffee amongst others.

Advanced Notice : Road resurfacing on Parnell St & Manor St, starting Monday October 17th

From October 17th to October 28th traffic coming into the City from the Cork Road will be diverted right onto the R675 Tramore Road and then left onto the R709 Inner Ring Road at the Tramore Round Roundabout. Traffic will follow the Inner Ring Road to the Folly Roundabout and turn left towards the R708 Ballytruckle Road.  Follow the R708 along South Parade and Catherine Street and finally turning right onto the R680 The Mall.

If possible, road users should avoid the area for the duration of these works.

Advanced Notice : Telephone Outage, Friday 21st

Waterford Council’s telephone system will be unavailable due to essential maintenance on Friday 21st October 2022 from 8am to 6pm.  During that time, calls will be directed to our out-of-hours answering service.

Customers can still contact Waterford Council via the email contact@waterfordcouncil.ie or via social media, as normal and our online services, including payments, will not be affected.  Our Customer Service Offices will remain open.

Mayor opens Books of Condolence for Creeslough and the late Billy Kyne

Mayor of Waterford City & County, Cllr. John O’Leary has opened online Books of Condolence for the victims of the Creeslough tragedy and for the late Billy Kyne, former Mayor of Waterford County.

Mayor of Waterford City & County expresses sympathy to the people of Creeslough

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. John O’Leary has expressed sympathy to the people of Creeslough, Co. Donegal.

Mayor O’Leary said:

“On behalf of the people of Waterford, and as Mayor of Waterford City & County Council, I would like to extend my sincere sympathies to the families of the victims of the recent Creeslough tragedy. Ten lives have been suddenly and tragically cut short and our thoughts, our prayers and our assistance must now go to those left bereaved by these awful events.

This tragedy shows just how fleeting life can be … people visiting a filling station, their local post office, the local shop … going about their daily business, just as any of us would be.

When a tragedy like this occurs, it is all the more important to rally around the affected communities and do what we can in some small way. With this in mind, I would encourage people to give what they can, however small, to the Irish Red Cross who are coordinating a Community Support Fund for the Creeslough community. The fund will work to assist those who have been bereaved, injured, made homeless, or left without an income because of the tragedy.

The saying “There but for the grace of God, go we all” is very apt in these sad circumstances, so once again I say to the people of Creeslough and Donegal, and to the heroic efforts of the emergency services who attended so vigilantly to the scene … we are with you, we are thinking of you and may God rest the victims of this sad and terrible event.”

Waterford City & County Age Friendly Alliance survey

This survey is being carried out on behalf of Waterford City and County Age Friendly Alliance. The Alliance wishes to ensure that priority issues relating to the quality of life of older people are addressed in a coordinated way by a variety of local bodies. The Age Friendly Strategy is intended to help to achieve this.

The intention of this survey is to gather the views of members of the community and of older members in particular,  about the things which contribute to a high quality of life for older people.
