CLOSING SOON : Music & Entertainment Business Assistance Scheme 2022 (MEBAS 2022)

  • €4m has been allocated for MEBAS 2022 to support those operating in the music sector
  • Self-employed performers, sole traders and businesses in the music industry with turnovers of €15,000 and over will be able to apply for grants of between €1,500 and €12,500
  • Performers such as musicians, singers, DJs, lighting and sound crew, audio equipment suppliers etc. will be eligible to apply
  • The scheme will open for applications at 1pm on January 27th and close at 1pm on February 17th.

Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, announced the opening date for the 2022 strand of the MEBAS (Music and Entertainment Business Assistance Scheme).  This simpler, easier to access new scheme will further support performers and individuals in the music business that have been impacted by the COVID-19 restrictions.

The Minister said:

“I have engaged extensively with stakeholders to understand the challenges faced by them and put in place supports that work for the sector. I am pleased to announce that MEBAS 2022 will open for applications on Thursday January 27th. As part of the €50m in supports I have secured for the Live Entertainment sector for 2022, I have allocated €4m to MEBAS 2022.”

The guidelines for MEBAS 2022 will be published next Tuesday, January 25th on the Department’s website in advance of the application portal opening on Thursday, January 27th 2022

The scheme will operate in a similar manner to CRSS (Covid Restrictions Support Scheme) by providing grants of up to the value of 15% of the average monthly VAT-exclusive turnover prior to the pandemic.

The aim of this scheme is to make a contribution to the overheads of self-employed people and sole traders in the music industry who have been significantly negatively affected by COVID-19. To be eligible, individuals/sole traders will need to demonstrate that their 2021 turnover was no more than 40% of their average turnover prior to the pandemic.

The Minister added:

“As part of a suite of measures to support those in the sector, MEBAS was launched in 2021 as a targeted support for self-employed performers and sole traders operating solely in the live entertainment sector who did not qualify for other business supports such as CRSS and who were significantly impacted by restrictions introduced to combat the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

In 2021, MEBAS supported over 1,000 such performers and live entertainment businesses. For MEBAS 2022, the Minister has again made funding available, which is expected to support a similar number of performers, crew, and sole traders in the music industry.  Self-employed individuals and sole traders including performers such as musicians, singers, DJs, lighting and sound crew, and audio equipment suppliers will be eligible to apply.

The grant will be paid for six months, January 2022 to June 2022, to assist self-employed performers, sole traders and businesses which have seen significant reductions in their turnover due to the COVID-19 pandemic and help to underpin their recovery as the restrictions are eased in the coming months.

In 2022, the Minister has made €50m available to support live entertainment. The following funding schemes have been provided to date:

  • €5m LPSS 2 – Pantomime scheme
  • €20m LPSS 3 – Scheme to cover December/January cancellations
  • €5m Local Live Performance Support Scheme (LLPSS)
  • €4m Music and Entertainment Support Scheme (MEBAS)
  • €5m (capital) Commercial Entertainment Capital Grant Scheme (CECGS)
  • €1m St. Patricks Festival

In 2021, these schemes supported thousands of individuals and businesses operating in the live events sector and thousands of hours of employment for artists and crews staging events.

Showcase beckons for Waterford craft and design companies

Waterford’s craft and design industry will have strong representation at this year’s Showcase Creative Expo, which takes place from February 27th to March 2nd in The RDS in Dublin.

Showcase, Ireland’s Creative Expo is now the foremost place for retailers to discover unique, design-led fashion and knitwear, jewellery, craft, gift and interiors. It offers the chance to explore the best of Ireland’s creativity from over 450 exhibitors including leading Irish designers and manufacturers and the very best emerging home-grown creative talent.

Four craft and design companies will be showcasing the very best of Waterford creativity, design and innovation, with the assistance of Local Enterprise Office Waterford.

The city and county-based enterprises attending are Mad Jessie’s hand drawn, colourful and unique clothing; Frances O’Reilly’s Dry Dog, super absorbent canine coats; Polly and Andy’s comfy clothing made from biodegradable bamboo; and Susan Furniss Radley’s Dust and Rock freedom giving Original Wrist Pockets. They have all been working closely with LEO Waterford in order to prepare them for one of Ireland’s largest craft exhibitions.

Running for over forty years, Showcase has an impressive track record in attracting Ireland’s most talented makers and designers, along with buyers from over twenty countries. This year’s Expo is a great platform for these Waterford designers to introduce their original products to national and international buyers.

Marie Jeanne Jacob of Mad Jessie, said that the exhibition is real opportunity for any artist or designer to take their creations to the next level, “I just can’t wait to be back at an event where I can talk with people face-to-face, so I’m very excited about this. I also spent the last few years creating connections online with businesses, artists and makers, and I am very much looking forward to meeting these people for the first time. I hope attendees get to see the huge amount of work that goes into every design, and how important sustainability, collaboration and community are to me and my brand.”

“It’s a thrill to be asked to attend this event and the team here is really looking forward to meeting new customers and picking the brains of like-minded creators.”

“After the past couple of years, we all feel this is an opportunity to make the most of the country opening up again and it will be amazing to simply interact with people and ‘talk shop’ again.  I definitely feel that we can take full advantage of the support we’ve received from LEO Waterford at Showcase 2022.”

Polly Doyle of Polly and Andy is looking forward to returning to Showcase, “I’m really excited to be back at Showcase. So much has changed since Showcase 2020 and I cannot wait to meet the buyers and other exhibitors face to face again.”

While Susan Furniss of Original Wrist Pockets aims to make the most of the opportunity, “Having spent the last two years concentrating on growing our online presence, Showcase is an ideal opportunity to venture outside of our online platform, to meet buyers the buyers and shops at the heart of our communities.

As Ireland reopens there is an appetite amongst consumers for a bricks-and-mortar store experience and we are delighted to be part of this journey at Showcase.”

Introducing a new product such as The Original Wrist Pocket to an online audience has had its challenges. It is a product that people want to feel and try on. Showcase offers the opportunity to see our product on shelves in stores, where people can be introduced to The Original Wrist Pocket in a setting that is familiar to them.”

Working in partnership with the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland, the 31 Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) around the country have set up a dedicated area within Showcase – the Local Enterprise Showcase – enabling up to 100 designers, manufacturers and craftspeople to sell directly to international buyers.

Brid Kirby of LEO Waterford said that Showcase is an invaluable chance for any craft-maker or designer to get an audience with potential customers.

“These four Waterford craft and design enterprises have shown creativity and ambition with their products and will certainly be amongst the most talented craft and design artists at this year’s Showcase.”

“Many have availed of training and mentoring in preparation for this opportunity, while others received financial support in order to help them appear at Showcase. They have perfected their pitch and been given the tools, advice and insights to take full advantage of this fantastic prospect.”

“We at the LEO also hope this inspires other artists and crafts people to take the leap and commercialise their creations. We are always available to assist start-ups in any way we can.”

If your business in pre-start, start-up or established business phase and would like to find out more about what business support services are available from LEO Waterford visit www.localenterprise.ie/Waterford or call to LEO Waterford offices at 35, The Mall, Waterford or the Civic Offices in Dungarvan.

Mayor of Waterford City and County accepts Waterford Greenway award

Photographs: Patrick Browne

2022 got off to a promising start as Waterford Greenway added to its trophy cabinet when the 46km walking and cycling trail was named as winner of the ‘Best Visitor Attraction’ in the Irish Independent 2022 Reader Travel Awards.

With tens of thousands of amenities, places and hospitality businesses nominated in fourteen categories, Irish Independent readers were particularly taken with Waterford Greenway.

Some of the Irish Independent’s readers comments included, “The surface is perfect,” and with coffee and lunch stops “for treats” along the way, and a super choice of places to eat, drink and stay in Waterford and Dungarvan and “It is always alive with people.”  Locals as well as tourists were particularly forthcoming with their praise for Waterford Greenway, citing “It promotes exercise, social get-togethers of families and mental well-being through its safe routes” and “It soothes the soul.”

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Joe Kelly was delighted to accept the award.  “What’s particularly special about this award is that it was made on behalf of the Irish Independent readers who have visited Waterford Greenway. With their experiences so positive and their feedback so affirming, the Council’s Greenway team, local communities, and stakeholders can take great pride in what they have created in Waterford.”

Pól Ó Conghaile, Travel Editor Irish Independent said, “I look forward to the Irish Independent’s Reader Travel Awards because they provide us with priceless, real-world insights from holidaymakers on the ground. Tens of thousands of comments provide a fascinating picture of what people actually visit, and why – and not a marketing snapshot.”

“This year, it was no surprise to me to see the Waterford Greenway top the nominations for ‘Ireland’s Best Visitor Attraction’.  It’s a super example of a route that has caught the imagination of both locals and visitors, created real tourism momentum, and inspired businesses both on and offline.  In just a few short years, it has become a gold standard greenway.”

The old railway line from Waterford City to Dungarvan is a spectacular 46km off-road cycling and walking trail which travels through time and nature crossing eleven bridges, three impressive viaducts and an atmospheric tunnel.

The popular route in Ireland’s Ancient East is peppered with heritage, history and natural beauty as it runs alongside the world renowned ornamental gardens at Mount Congreve, Waterford & Suir Valley narrow gauge heritage railway, former woollen mills and railway stations and offers breathtaking views of the River Suir, the Comeragh Mountains, The Copper Coast and Dungarvan Bay.

No stranger to accolades, Waterford Greenway made an impact with Irish Independent readers in 2019 when it was named ‘Ireland’s Favourite Adventure’ in the Irish Independent Reader Travel Awards, while in 2021 it was awarded silver in the Excellence Category at the 10th European Greenways Award Ceremony.  In 2020 Waterford Greenway was the first Irish Greenway to attain Green Flag status, which it retained in 2021.

Love is all around…Waterford!

Love is in the air and Waterford City and County Council’s Art Office is bringing a touch of romance to the streets of Waterford.

A love-filled Valentine’s programme of events has been compiled by Arts Officer, Conor Nolan and it’s guaranteed to melt the hearts of the young and young at heart.

lovin_waterford lovin_waterford

Highlights include the St. Valentines Post Box of Love located at Hanover Street.  With pre-printed postcards available from Central Library, Waterford Gallery of Art and Garter Lane you can send your love letter to that someone special to let them know you’re thinking of them.  With the most romantic letters read out online and the chance to win special prizes, it’s time to summon your inner muse and write from the heart!

Throughout the week Barbershop workshops will take place in nursing homes throughout the city leading to special in-home concerts.

The weekend ahead of St. Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 12th and Sunday, February 13th, will be filled with amorous tunes as the Campervan of Sound and special guests serenade the crowds in the city centre, expect some romantic interludes in the Waterford Cultural Quarter and there will be a special St. Valentines blessing held for Waterford lovers at White Friars Church in Dublin, where the relics of St. Valentine are interred.

Conor Nolan, Arts Officer, Waterford City and County Council explained the reasoning behind the St. Valentine’s programme of events.  “We’ve all been through a tough couple of years and for many it was a time that was spent socially distanced and apart from those special people in our lives.”

“Now that things have opened up it’s time to celebrate being able to be together, be it with a parent, partner, spouse or good friend.  For those who can’t be together, posting a letter at the Post Box of Love could very well reach them, as selected love requests will be read out online.”

“The events planned over the next few days are there to very simply celebrate love and bring a smile to people’s faces.”

The St. Valentine’s Day programme in Waterford is aided by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media through its LLPPS3 programme.

Be Part of the St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations in Waterford

March 17th sees the return of the highly anticipated St. Patrick’s Day Parade to Waterford and for the first time, a three day festival from March 17th to March 19th.

Waterford City and County Council and EveryEvent are inviting applications from community groups, sports clubs, charities and businesses, large and small, to take part in the parade to really showcase what a diverse and special place Waterford is.

This year the theme of the parade is ‘Waterford – Ireland’s Best Place to Live’ and the festival will pay homage to Waterford’s people and communities, its culture and heritage, its diversity, and its musical and artistic talent.  So whether you want to drive, walk, dance, hop, skip, or jump your way along the parade route, now is the time to get involved!

As Waterford was Ireland’s first City to hold a St. Patrick’s Day Parade, back in 1903, over the years the Waterford parades have become synonymous with colour, culture and creativity.  St. Patrick’s Day 2022 will be no exception, particularly after a two-year absence.

Trevor Dermody, Director of Waterford Academy of Music & Arts (WAMA) said he and his team are looking forward to partaking in the Parade. “For the last number of years, walking in the Waterford parade has been a highlight of our calendar.  It’s a great way to showcase our students and their talent.  The WAMA members are really excited to take part again in 2022, and are looking forward to showing off our music, dance & artistic talents to the people of Waterford.”

“It’s also a great day for families, especially this year when this is the first occasion we can really get together as a group.  There’s a great buzz in the academy as our teachers and students are busy exploring themes that reflect why Waterford is Ireland’s Best Place to Live.”

John Grubb of EveryEvent said that since the announcement of the Parade going ahead, there’s a lot of enthusiasm amongst community and sporting groups.  “After two long years, the general feeling is one of anticipation and excitement.”

“Groups and societies have had little or no prospect to get together for quite a while, so taking part in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a great opportunity to get together, dress up, put on the face paint, and showcase to the whole city.”
