Screening of Writing Home in association with Waterford City Arts Office

Waterford City Arts Office is delighted to present a free screening of ‘Writing Home’, on Thursday March 16th at 6.30pm in The Waterford Gallery of Art.

The documentary about creative engagement was developed by poet Colm Keegan for homeless service users. The initiative was developed to improve understanding around issues of homelessness while supporting social integration and aims to inform policy decisions around the use of the arts within state funded services.

Colm worked with several service providers across the country, developing and delivering a programme of workshops to engage with homeless service users in Dublin, Kilkenny and Waterford with each location working towards a public celebration of the creativity of participants.

Colm worked with selected groups over a period of six weeks. These groups explored multiple means of written self-expression and reflection, like rap and spoken word as well as looking at structure, character and storytelling.  Each participant created a small body of work, based on their own life experiences.

The process was far more successful than envisaged, with real engagement from homeless service users, a marginalised group who can be difficult to reach using established Arts project delivery.  The creative potential unleashed and the wellbeing outcomes were such a revelation that the initiative was awarded Best Education/Training Initiative at the All Ireland Community & Council Awards (LAMAs).

The programme was supported by Kilkenny County Council, Creative Ireland and Poetry Ireland.  Tickets are free but booking is advised as there is limited space. To book visit https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/writing-home-screening-in-the-waterford-gallery-of-art-tickets-576968998807

Tagann draíocht na Oscars go dtí an scáileán mór i nDún Garbhán

Mar chuid de chlár Sheachtain na Gaeilge, reáchtáil Oifig Gaeilge Chomhairle Cathrach agus Contae Phort Láirge, i gcomhar le Dún Garbhán le Gaeilge, taispeántas speisialta de ‘An Cailín Ciúin’ i bPictiúrlann SGC Dhún Garbhán ar an Déardaoin, 9 Márta. 2

Cuireadh tús le taispeáint an chéad scannáin Ghaeilge a ainmníodh do Oscar don Scannán Idirnáisiúnta is Fearr le fáiltiú deochanna d’aíonna ar tugadh cuireadh dóibh, ina measc siúd daoine le naisc leis na Déise acu a raibh ról acu sa scannán. Bhí bailiúchán buicéad ann chomh maith do charthanacht áitiúil, RNLI Cheann Heilbhic agus Dún Garbhán.

I measc na n-aíonna speisialta ar an oíche bhí Neans Nic Dhonncha agus Elaine O’Hara. Iníon í Neans le Sorcha Ní Chéilleachair agus gariníon í le Tomás Ó Chéilleachair agus Ann Mulqueen ón Rinn. Bhí páirt Ghráinne aici sa scannán, agus bhí páirt Áine sa scannán ag Elaine, atá pósta ar Chian Ó Conchúir ón Rinn.

Labhair An Comhairleoir John O’Leary, Méara Chathair agus Chontae Phort Láirge, leis an lucht féachana i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla ag rá, “Is mór an onóir dom a bheith anseo tráthnóna inniu chun ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar an rath iontach atá ar An Cailín Ciúin. Mar an chéad scannán Gaeilge a ainmníodh d’Oscar, chuaigh an scannán seo go mór i gcion ar chroíthe agus ar aigní lucht féachana ar fud an domhain.

“Nuair a smaoiníonn tú go bhfuil an scéal suite inár nGaeltacht féin anseo i gContae Phort Láirge agus gurb í duine de phríomh-aisteoirí an scannáin ná Carrie Crowley ó Phort Láirge, tá sé do-chreidte. Beidh Port Láirge i lár an aonaigh ag na Oscars — nach iontach an scéal é!

“Cuireann rath An Cailín Ciúin ar ár gcumas ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar an tallann iontach i dtionscal na scannán agus na teilifíse Gaeilge. Tá sé seo aitheanta againn le fada an lá sa chuid seo de Chontae Phort Láirge, le rath ar an gcomhlacht léiriúcháin fadbhunaithe, Nemeton TV sa Rinn, chomh maith lena leithéidí Foley Films/An Corsaiceach agus Red Shoe Productions, comhlachtaí áitiúla a bhfuil cláir spóirt, ceoil, fíriciúla agus faisnéise den scoth curtha ar fáil acu do TG4 agus do chainéil teilifíse eile sa bhaile agus thar lear.

“In ainneoin a sceideal trom roimh Oíche na Oscars, sheol Carrie Crowley teachtaireacht álainn físeáin chuig an lucht féachana agus dúirt sé “Tá an-áthas orm go bhfuil sibh ar fad i nDún Garbhán anocht chun An Cailín Ciúin a fheiceáil. Tá an scannán seo ar cheann de na rudaí is taitneamhaí a rinne mé riamh i mo shaol. Is seod beag álainn é An Cailín Ciúin dúinne ar fad a d’oibrigh air mar chriú, mar aisteoirí, mar stiúrthóirí agus mar léiritheoirí agus mar scríbhneoirí.

“Bhí sé chomh speisialta sin; an script sin, an scéal agus an rud is tábhachtaí… an cailín a fuaireamar, Catherine Clinch, a ghlac páirt Cáit sa scannán…bhí sí díreach foirfe.”

Thaithin an scannán go mór leis an lucht féachana agus tar éis an taispeántais, reachtáil Máire Seó Breathnach, Oifigeach Gaeilge le Comhairle Cathrach agus Contae Phort Láirge seisiún cheisteanna agus freagraí le Neans Nic Dhonncha agus Elaine O’Hara.

I ndiaidh na hócáide dúirt Máire Seó, “Táimid thar a bheith sásta maidir le conas mar a thaitin an scannán leis an lucht féachana, chomh maith leis an teachtaireacht ó Carrie agus an léargas ón mbeirt aisteoir a bhí mar chuid d’eispéireas iomlán An Cailín Ciúin. Tá mé chomh buíoch go raibh siad in ann a bheith linn anocht.

“Mar Oifigigh Ghaeilge in Údaráis Áitiúla, is é an ról atá againn úsáid ár dteanga dhúchais a chur chun cinn agus a éascú. Léiríonn scannáin Ghaeilge ar nós An Cailín Ciúin agus Róise & Frank, a deineadh a scannánú i nGaeltacht na nDéise, an Ghaeilge mar theanga bheo agus bheoga, agus tá áthas an domhain orm gur féidir linn é seo a cheiliúradh anocht mar chuid dár gclár imeachtaí Sheachtain na Gaeilge. Buíochas le gach duine a bhí páirteach in ócáid na hoíche anocht.

“Guímid gach rath ar An Cailín Ciúin ag na Oscars an tseachtain seo chugainn — go n-éirí leo!”

Road Safety Alert – Weather Warning for Snow

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is advising all road users to prepare for further cold weather conditions as Met Eireann have issued a nationwide Yellow warning for snow over the next two days. This will lead to hazardous road conditions and reduced visibility.  Some counties are also subject to an orange weather warning for snow.

Road users are being advised to check local traffic and weather conditions before setting out on any journeys. The RSA has the following practical advice for road users in snowy conditions:

Drivers are advised to:

·      Remove all snow from your vehicle before commencing your journey. Snow left on the roof will become loose and can drop onto the windscreen during braking, thereby causing sudden and severe restriction to your vision. It can also fall off during your drive and cause injury to pedestrians or a reflex action by another driver.

·      Clear windows and mirrors before you set out, use a screen scraper and de-icer. Do not use hot water on the windscreen as it can crack the glass.

·      In snowy conditions slow down, use all controls delicately and leave extra distance between you and the vehicle in front. Avoid over steering and harsh braking and harsh acceleration. Use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin. Select a low gear when travelling downhill especially if through bends.

·      In snowy conditions, visibility will be reduced. Do not drive on the tail-lights of the vehicle in front (Target Fixing). This can give a false sense of security and you will be too close to be able to brake safely. In heavy snow, use your fog lights, turn off your radio and open your window a fraction, so you can hear other traffic, especially at junctions.

·      Use dipped headlights at all times, and fog lights in heavy snow to ensure you are seen by other motorists (but don’t forget to turn them off afterwards).

·      Watch out for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists and allow extra space.

·      Drivers of high sided vehicles like trucks and buses are particularly at risk from both the dangers posed by snow but also from the high winds associated with heavy snow conditions.

For a copy of the RSA’s ‘Top 10 tips for driving in snowy conditions click here.

Pedestrians are advised to:

·      Wear high visibility clothing or carry a torch as visibility is reduced in snowy conditions. Wear clothing that does not restrict your vision.

·      Wear appropriate footwear. Walk on the footpath, not in the street. Walk on the right hand side of the road, facing traffic if there are no footpaths.

·      DO NOT underestimate the danger of snow and ice. Many slips and falls happen in places people regard as safe and secure, typically outside their front door, on the door step, on the path or while getting out of the car. When you approach a footpath or roadway that appears to be covered with snow or ice, always use extreme caution.

For a copy of the RSA’s ‘Top 10 tips to avoid a fall or slip in snowy conditions click here.

Cyclists and Motorcyclists are advised to:

·      Motorcyclists / Cyclists should not compromise their safety by their ‘need’ to travel in snowy conditions.

·      Visibility is reduced in snowy conditions so cyclists should wear a Sam Browne Bandoleer belt or high visibility vest and ensure the lights on your bike are working correctly.

·      Motorcyclists should avoid wearing a dark visor in any bad light conditions.

More safety tips for Pedestrians, Cyclists and Motorcyclists using the roads in snowy conditions can be found here.

See RSA Road Safety Alert for Ice issued on 6 March 2023 for more information and advice on using the roads in the current weather.

Waterford Student set for National Enterprise final

Local Enterprise Office Waterford has announced that a winning teenager entrepreneur, Nathan Sfendji from Waterpark College will represent Waterford at this year’s Student Enterprise Programme National Finals on Friday 5th May.

The winning business, named Hart Island is an online fashion retailer with clothing made in the EU using innovative and new to market techniques. The clothing is made from 100% organic cotton and environmentally sustainable. He also mixes recycled cotton into newer products, further reducing reliance on organic materials.

An estimated 850 students from 14 Waterford schools took part in the annual programme this year. 120 took part in the Waterford Final on March 7th as part of Local Enterprise Week, which was held at the Park Hotel in Dungarvan.

The enterprise education initiative, funded by the Government of Ireland through Enterprise Ireland and delivered by the 31 Local Enterprise Offices in local authorities throughout the country, saw over 24,000 students from just under 500 secondary schools across the country take part in 2021 / 2022.  The programme supports students to create, design and market their own business, all with the hope of reaching the National Finals.

The Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr John O’Leary, spoke at the event about the Council’s long-standing commitment to youth enterprise and the outstanding efforts of the whole team at the Local Enterprise Office in Waterford.

Waterford has a strong history in this competition, winning awards on numerous occasions, including the overall Best Senior Enterprise Award, and hopes are high for more success this year.

Speaking at the county final, Acting Head of Enterprise, Jacqui Gaule of Local Enterprise Office Waterford congratulated the students, saying,

“We have a very successful student enterprise programme here in Waterford. By fostering an enterprising culture in the classroom, the Local Enterprise Offices are working with teachers and schools to help nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs. Our national finalists are excellent ambassadors for the programme and we wish them the very best of luck on the May 5th. We will all be there to support them.  What our students are learning from the programme is that with the right supports and encouragement, they can take an idea from the classroom and develop it into a real-life business. The skills they learn along the way, such as business planning, market research, selling and teamwork, will help them become more entrepreneurial throughout their future careers”.

Since the Student Enterprise Programme began in 2003, over 300,000 students have taken part, learning key skills on how to create a business idea, start a business and grow a business.  The Student Enterprise Programme also has new range of online resources for 2022 / 2023 at www.StudentEnterprise.ie, which will feature regular blogs and houses a full range of Student Enterprise resources for students and teachers.

Further information around the Student Enterprise Programme is available from www.studententerprise.ie and by searching #studententerprise on social media.
