Waterford Local Sports & Physical Activity Plan

Waterford Local Sports & Physical Activity Plan aims to develop a high-level countywide 5-year framework with targeted actions to increase participation in sport and physical activities across the County and shape a more inclusive, active and healthier Waterford.

Waterford City and County Council, in partnership with Waterford Sports Partnership, has commenced the development of a Local Sports & Physical Activity Plan for Waterford aimed at increasing participation in sport and physical activity across the City and County.

This aligns with the Government’s National Sports Policy 2018–2027 and is supported by Sport Ireland under Action 8 of the policy.

Waterford Local Sports & Physical Activity Plan

What is it?

The Sports & Physical Activity Plan will be a high-level countywide 5-year framework with targeted actions to increase participation in sport and physical activities across the County and shape a more inclusive, active and healthier Waterford.

The definition of sport for the purpose of this plan is as follows:

“All forms of physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aims at expressing or improving physical fitness and mental wellbeing, forming social relationships or obtaining results in competition at all levels.”

The plan will be built around three key themes:

  • Active People and Communities
  • Active Spaces and Places
  • Active Leadership and Partnerships

These themes focus on increasing participation, enhancing sports infrastructure, and building strong leadership to support sports development across the county.
