South East tackles Roadside Litter

Mayor of Waterford City and County Council, Cllr. Pat Nugent, together with members of Dungarvan Tidy Towns launched the ‘Roadside Litter Campaign’ in Dungarvan on Wednesday 21st March.

The ‘Roadside Litter Campaign’ is a new initiative in the fight against litter on our roadsides. It is a regional campaign involving Councils in Waterford, Kilkenny and Wexford. The campaign slogan highlights that “All Roads Lead Home” and asks road users to “Bin It, Don’t Fling It”. The campaign aims to change attitudes about litter in the South East Region.

A litter survey carried out in the South East in 2017 showed that on average 100kg of litter was dumped per 5km of roadside; 37% of all litter was associated with drinks, with plastic drink bottles accounting for 20%, aluminium cans 10% and disposable cups 7%, of the litter.

The ‘Roadside Litter Campaign’ asks local communities, groups and individuals to bring their litter home with them. The message can be found on tax disc holders, available free of charge at Motor Taxation Offices in Waterford and Dungarvan. Temporary road signage advising road users of the ‘Roadside Litter Campaign’ will be erected in areas where persistent roadside littering is evident.

Mayor of Waterford City and County Council Cllr. Pat Nugent said ‘I am delighted to officially launch the roadside litter initiative and support the objective to improve our local environment by the responsible management of litter. It is no secret that some of our roads are littered with single use items such as takeaway wrappers and containers, plastic bottles and coffee cups. This initiative encourages road users to have more pride in their local roads and to take their litter home with them.’

At the Launch were Cllr Pat Nugent, Mayor Waterford City & County. Fergal Galvin, Luke O’Brien and Ella Ryan, Waterford City & County Council. Bernadette Moloney, Kilkenny County Council. Cliona Connolly, Wexford County Council, Anne Marie Rossiter, Aoife Power, Gemma Power and Joy Lake, Dungarvan Tidy Towns.

Annual Ted & Mary O’Regan Arts Bursary now open for applications

Applications are now being invited for the fourteenth annual Ted & Mary O’Regan Arts Bursary. The Bursary was inaugurated in 2005 to honour the memory of one of Waterford’s best loved and respected couples. The purpose of the Award is to assist an individual or individuals, either from or with a strong connection to Waterford City or County, to pursue and develop their chosen arts discipline.

Applicants should note that the criteria for the Bursary are open and flexible and that people of all ages may apply. Whilst the Bursary has, in the past facilitated recipients to attend a third level arts course, this is not a pre-requisite. The award will aim to fill the financial gap which prohibits an arts worker or arts student of any age or any arts discipline achieving their artistic goal.

The Bursary is funded by a combination of local arts organizations, statutory agencies and by individual contributions from friends, associates and family of the late Ted and Mary O’Regan. Garter Lane Arts Centre, Waterford Youth Arts, Spraoi, Theatre Royal  and WDS are among the local arts groups who make the award possible and the statutory bodies who contribute are Waterford City & County Council and Waterford Youth Committee.

Together, these organisations have enabled the awards committee to offer local artists a total of more than €80,000 in support of their activities since the foundation of the Bursary.

Further information and application forms for the award can be had by going to O’Regan Bursary at www.waterfordyoutharts.com

The closing date for the receipt of applications is Friday 1st June 2018 at 5pm.

Boil Water Notices lifted for eight supplies in Waterford

All water supplies in Waterford now restored following Storm Emma but public reminded to remain vigilant in their use of water.

9th March 2018: Irish Water and Waterford City and County Council are please to confirm that Boil Water Notices issued for the eight public water supplies in the county have now been lifted following consultation with the HSE.

The Boil Water Notices were put in place as a precautionary measure after Storm Emma on the following schemes:

  • Ballyknock
  • Ballyguiry
  • Carrigeen
  • Comeragh (Briska Lower)
  • Grallagh
  • Tinalyra/Kilcooney
  • Knockalisheen
  • Melleray

Customers supplied by these schemes can now resume normal use of the water for drinking and food preparation.

All customers who were impacted by water outages in Waterford should now have their supply restored to normal. We are however continuing our work to fix leaks throughout the network and this may lead to some intermittent localised outages as leaks are found and repaired.

We would remind the public to remain vigilant in their use of water and to take action to fix leaks on their own properties and report any leaks they see in the public network to Irish Water by contacting 1850 278 278.

Irish Water and Waterford City and County Council would like to thank all affected customers for their patience while we worked to resolve all the issues resulting from the freezing conditions last week.

Severe Weather Update – Monday 5th March, 8:30am

Waterford City and County Council is working to get the City and County open for business. Large areas of the City and County are now accessible and all national and regional roads are now open.

There are a small number of coastal areas and local roads which are still inaccessible. The upland areas of the Comeraghs and Knockmealdowns continue to be impassable and will take some time yet to resolve. We will continue to work alongside local effort to clear these difficult to reach areas.

The snow clearing continued throughout Sunday to clear access to housing estates in the urban areas and will continue today, Monday. We will require householders and business owners to continue to assist in the clearance of snow from footpaths in front of their premises.

Our staff has worked throughout the weekend to make the areas around schools as safe as possible and parents should check locally regarding reopening of schools. Caution is still advised as footpaths and parking areas remain wet and slippery. Particular caution should be advised where children are getting on and off school buses.

The Severe Weather Management Team will reconvene early on Monday morning. The focus of this week’s effort will be to clean up residual snow/ice and continue to work to provide access on local roads and resume regular service provision.

Appreciation is due to the commitment of all involved in providing front line services over this extraordinary weather event. We advise members of the public to continue to exercise caution as the weather event unfolds and roads are potentially dangerous.  Please continue to report areas of emergency via our social media channels.

Caution: Speed Ramps damaged

Speed cushions/ramps have been damaged on many roads around the City by ploughs during the snow clearance operations and in some cases may cause a hazard to traffic.

We would ask motorists to be particularly careful on roads where there are speed cushions until such time as we can get to repair them.

Severe Weather Update – Sunday 4th March, 12 noon

Waterford City and County Council is continuing the clearance and recovery efforts following the severe weather during the week.

Most national and primary roads are clear (both ways) at this stage although road users must continue to drive with caution and at a reduced speed.  Large amounts of slush and slush-ice remain as well as snow mounds as a result of ploughing.  Caution is advised.  Some roads are still impassable and we are alerting the public to this through our free MapAlerter service.

Please see our Facebook page for some images of the relief efforts made by our staff over the past few days.

We have crews out since 5am this morning and will be continuing to clear and then re-grit roads where necessary.  Members of the military are also assisting with footpaths and other clearances.  We have a long list of estates, schools, local roads etc that have particular access issues and we’ll be focusing the efforts on these over the next few hours.

There is also a reasonably significant thaw at the moment which will alleviate conditions very considerably as the day progresses in most areas.  If people have serious concerns about their own areas later in the day, they should contact us via social media channels or through the emergency number (0761 102020) if the matter is urgent and serious.
